Upgrade Bug
Upgrade Bug
I just installed version 17, and now if I run the install I get the following message. I only get this when I run a web install.
I have made sure that I rebuild all my web blocks. I have reinstalled Installaware NX and the build works fine if it is compiled with NX. I have changed the compression ratio to see if that makes a difference, but I still get the same error. I have remove the features and added them back in, but that did not solve my problem. I enabled the logging to see if I can get more information, but that was not helpful at all.
Is there any way I can debug this, or is this a known issue in version 17?

Re: Upgrade Bug
Dear PierreS,
I'm not informed of a similar issue with IA 17 and honestly for testing purpose, I just tried some WEB MEDIA BLOCKs created with IA 17 ... and it works fine.
I know that seems a stupid question, Are you sure you have rebuilded your WEB MEDIA BLOCKS in IA 17?
Regards

Re: Upgrade Bug
Hi Francesco
Yes I am sure that I rebuild the web blocks.
It is only the one web block that is causing the problem. If I remove all the files out of the web block, I still get the error, but If I remove the entire web block, the install runs all the way. I have also recreated the feature, but that did not make a difference, I still get the error.

Re: Upgrade Bug
Dear PierreS,
are you able to reproduce your issue with a very minimal project?
Just a question, does your project include more then one WEB MEDIA BLOCK?
If true, could you please verify if a single identical file is part of multiple WEB MEDIA BLOCKs?

Hi Francesco
Thank you for the response, yes I am able to reproduce this issue in a small install that only contains 1 text file. I striped out as much as I can out of my install. I have attached the install and the source of the install.

Re: Upgrade Bug
Dear Pierre,
Could you please tell me the OS and the user account you used to replicate the issue?
Please also post with your reply, the build number reported by your IA 17 installation (Project Tab -> Version - in IA IDE).
Regards.

Hi Francesco
I am using Windows 7 professional and I am a local admin user on that PC. I downloaded the latest version of InstallAware 17, build 8.12.13 wide.

Re: Upgrade Bug
Dear Pierre,
could you please try the included attachement?
It contains a ready to use setup.exe based on the project you sent me.
It uses a link to a different URL (a test URL that we use internally) to download a rebuilded media block.
Anyway, the last IA build is 8.20.13 (IA 17.04).
Regards.

Re: Upgrade Bug
Hi Francesco
The file that you sent me worked, but it is a single install exe and not a web installation, on my system the single exe and CD/DVD builds work fine, it is only the web builds that gives this error. I tried this with Version 17.04 and I still have the same error.
Where you able to reproduce the error on your side?
Pierre

Re: Upgrade Bug
No Pierre, it is a Web Exe build the one I sent you.
It downloads the "LiveUpdate2.en.txt" from our URL.
I am able to reproduce th issue on my side using your original compiled files ... but, if I rebuild them it seems to work fine.

Re: Upgrade Bug
Solved this. Just upgraded our old projects to 18 and the same issue we had that also prevented us from upgrading to 17 also. We had been stuck on 15 because of this for a while. The problem occurs only for web based releases and even when all the 7Zip files are local to the install executable.
Anyway, with a lot of pain and trial and error I found that if I change the name of one of the web modules it works. Why? I have no idea, but I suspect that since the name of the module (renamed for sake of simplicity) "Foo.7zip" was the same first part as another module "Foo Extras.7zip". Perhaps its also because of the space in the other module's name. Another reason why this might have failed is that the modules name is part of the product name\title\subject "Foo 12.1".
As an aside: I implore the InstallAware team to please consider your customer's needs on these forums. When I read these forums I am often shocked at the blunt and rude responses (I know some at least some of the people are no longer with your company). Even so even now I want you to know we are not idiots, most of us are developers with many years experience.

Dear Jasper,
before to reply on the matter of this topic;
it is quite some time that I am personally involded with managing this forum and honestly, I really believe that all of us really do our best to support "OUR" users requests. Do you really believe that we have such poor consideration of our InstallAware community?
... I must admit that I am .... quite shocked by your request.

Here is a response to a customer that had a similar issue:
MichaelNesmith Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:58 am
"Then I'm afraid you're not qualified to be using InstallAware. A certain basic level of observational skills ARE required. While it can be hard to quantify or qualify the exact skill set, I can assure you that if you cannot observe file size changes, this does disqualify you."
Michael Nesmith stayed on the support forum more than a year after posting that response

Re: Upgrade Bug
Dear Jasper,
Honestly, I have the suspect that you are only trying to start some unproductive polemics.
It is not possible to pass a judgment to an answer taken out of its context ... and instead to continue to report topics that are related to events occurred years ago, I may suggest you to be focused on the present moment.
I must admit that we are still not able to travel through time ... despite all the attempts that we have made.
Finally, I am forced to ask you to refrain in continuing any kind of discussion not strictly related to the purpose of this forum.
I am sure in your cooperation.
Thanks!
