Installing 3.5 plugin

Postby neilnewton » Tue Mar 11, 2014 9:40 am

Hi,

We have a copy of Installaware 12. Our install has worked fine to install 3.5. The 3.5 plugin is in a 7 zip file in a modules directory. When the install runs now we get a "unable to install plugin" message. As an experiment we took the 7 zip file for 3.5 and manually unzipped it successfully. I am wondering if it's the msi's interaction with 7 zip. I have been looking through the project and can not find the exact place where installaware points this directory and file or where it attempts to unzip the file. I did look at the "files tool" which tells me that it finds directories embedded in the install and allows you to change them. The directory I mentioned (which hold this 3.5 7zip file and a number of other plug in installs) is in that tool.

I would appreciate any advice on how to solve this and how to find the relevant parts of the project that will let us see how the install is trying to install this 3.5 file.

Thanks,
Neil

Dear Neil,

I am very sorry, but it is not clear to me what you really mean with "3.5 plugin".

is It a zipped customized module that you extract at setup Runtime and then moved/copied on the target system?

Francesco,

Thanks for responding. The use of the word plugin is not my choice but actually part of the error message we get when we try to run the install package when it gets to the 3.5 install. It might be coming from the 3.5 install itself.
To clarify, we have a number of installation files on a directory on our server which the install package that we build in Installaware uses. These are on a web server that makes them available through a url. I'm not sure how Installaware knows what this directory is; I am new to this and looked through the whole Installaware package to see where the directory of these install packages are specified. I did find a tool in the design section that pulls directories from the project and it lists this same directory I am discussing. But I couldn't find it in any of the steps of the project. I am hoping first you can tell me where these directories are kept. I also looked to see how Installaware is trying to unzip these files and install them. I could not find that information in the project either.

The real problem is this "plugin" issue. What that means is that Installaware knows where the 3.5 7zip file is on our server and has successfully installed it in the past; this is a new problem and we have made no changes to the installaware package. When it tries to install it we get that "can't install plugin" message which simply means that InstallAware has problems either unzipping the 3.5 7zip package or it can't install 3.5 once it is unzipped.

Those are our issues. I have inherited this install from someone who left so there are some issues I have to figure out and hope for your help.

Thanks,
Neil

Dear Neil,

Could I test your package? is it can be downloaded from a link?

Francesco,

Thanks for answering and I apologize for the late reply. We had a release to get out.

I think I know what the problem is (thought not the solution). If this doesn't help you figure out my problem then I will give you link to my install as you asked.

What I found was that .net 3.5 is being installed in a script which calls a setup.exe in the runtimes/netbin35 folder. I went and ran the exe outside of installaware and I got an error telling me that installation of 3.5 had to be done in Control Panel. I looked at the machine I'm running my build on (an oracle virtualbox vm running windows 7 ultimate) and 3.5 is not installed so the is is not that the framework is already there.

I have been told that this is an issue for some of our customers that just recently changed over from xp to windows 7 and I'm wondering if the new operating is having trouble with the setup.exe for 3.5 which is probably years old.

Let me know what solutions you can think of for this issue.

Thanks,
Neil

Dear Neil,

Ok now it is clear what you mean.

What you are reporting in reality is not an error. This because NET 3.5 Runtime is already included in Windows 7 and you only need to activate it.

I may suggest you to have a look at the following link.
