Major InstallAware Update - 6.42

Postby CandiceJones » Tue Mar 13, 2007 10:28 am

This is a strongly recommended update for all customers. This version adds several major enhancements:

1) Multi-Core Compression: Compress your setups using all the cores available on your system. If you have 4 cores, the compressor will automatically use all 4. If you have 2 CPUs with 4 cores, the compressor will automatically use all 8. This lets the compression speeds improve nearly linearly with each additional core. [previously, only up to two cores could be used]

2) Faster Compression: The compression speed is now up to 2x faster, on a clock-per-clock basis (without taking into account additional cores which will also additionally improve speed as described above). The compressor also produces slightly smaller files (a savings of up to 5%).

3) Hard Links when Building Compressed/Web/Patch Setups: Since all these build types actually produce a single compressed package, files and runtimes are no longer copied during a build process. Instead, hard links are created for dramatic performance improvements during builds of these deployment types. In fact, these types may now occasionally build faster than even Uncompressed setups. The net speed increase is in excess of 95% during the file copy phase. [third party plug-ins need to be updated separately to take advantage of this feature]

4) Global Progress: You can now insert additional progress bars and gauges on your progress windows, and display a custom progress range when you bind them to a variable in the dialog editor, and configure them to receive the "written variable value". This lets you build setups with global progress feedback for lengthy runtime, web media block, or other similar install operations. [you still need to build the code for this manually]

To upgrade:
a) Install the latest trial from the public website.
b) Log on to your customer site, and regenerate, then reinstall your license. [only if you are a licensed customer]
