JET 4.0 and OLEDB Drivers

Postby GeorgScholz » Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:58 am

Hello, I tried the demo version of InstallAware, but I found no merge modules for Jet 4.0 AND the respective OLEDB drivers.

Do you offer such modules? My purchase decision depends on the availibility of these modules.

I'm under pressure and I need a simple and quick solution to this. I looked through some messages here and only found answers like "look it up in google" - I did so, but found no appealing solutions.

Thank you
Georg Scholz

Hi Georg,

Aren't these merge modules downloadable from Microsoft?

Hi Candice,

I looked for it, but didn't find it.

As *you* are the experts on on the installation topic, please can you look this up and tell me?

JET 4.0 is a standard module IMHO.

Thanks

The advantage of merge module technology is that any third party vendor (including, of course, Microsoft) can make a merge module, and you can consume these from within your Windows Installer based setup project (including, of course, InstallAware).

InstallAware also provides an enhanced application runtime installation technology; this is the reason we do not provide merge modules, but our own application runtime installers - offering a better, integrated end-user experience; as well as superior compression and the ability to share runtimes between different setups. This is why you won't find any InstallAware built merge modules - what you'll find instead are InstallAware built application runtimes.

You can do things the InstallAware way and author a custom application runtime:
http://www.installaware.com/installawar ... s_view.pdf

Or, you can find an EXE or MSM installer for the runtimes you seek from the available third party sources (such as their website). If the vendor of the technology does not have a download available to install these technologies, unfortunately, we cannot invent one.

Very important advice

Dear Candice,

I do not expect that you are building the merge modules, but from a company like yours, which is specialized on the installation topic, I expect that at least you provide links to the most common modules needed by software developers.

I'm buying your product because I want to SAVE TIME !!

Please take my advice to heart.
It will boost your business.

Hmm, did you try the Install ODBC Driver command? That might actually do the job for you...see if it offers the driver you seek in the drop-down box inside the command edit window.

If you are going to be installing on Windows XP Pro SP2 and above (XP as the minimum requirement) then you don't need a Jet 4 merge module as Jet 4 is built into Windows XP already.

A good site with a list of 3rd party merge modules can be at
http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/msi/msm.htm

This took only a minute to find using Google, which is far less than the time it took for George to blast Candice because IA doesn't have a link to a merge module.
