Stop/Start Dependent Services

Postby StrohMan » Wed Oct 03, 2007 4:42 pm

I am new to creating MSI setups ... and also new to InstallAware, so I apologize for the newbie question!

I want to stop existing services (say IIS Admin or the Print Spooler), but want to make sure all dependent services startup also. It doesn't appear the basic Control Service function accommodates this.

Let me know if you have any ideas on how to best handle this.

Hi StrohMan,

Well, if you know the main service name, and this one has several dependencies, then when you stop that service, all dependencies should be stop if the main service is configure to do that, otherwise you may need to stop each one after the other.

Edhy,

Thanks for the reply. I don't have an issue with stopping the services ... all dependent services will stop no problem. My issue is starting them back up. If I take the service "IISADMIN", for example, it will stop the associated services "World Wide Web Publishing" and "SMTP", but I need to make sure those all get restarted after stopping.

I might have to rely on creating a custom C++ dll to accomplish this for me efficiently ... unless anyone has other ideas here.

Hi StrohMan,
Thanks for the clarification. Sorry but I would not know how to accomplish what you want in IA.
