Trying to add a read me file

Post by billwarner7 »

Hi,
I'm trying to add a read me file to my build. I want the file to end up in the C:\\Program Files\\MyApp\\Support directory. When I look in the uncompressed build I find the file, but it doesn't get to the program directory.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Can you see the file in the MSI code window? If it's added using conventional drag-and-drop you'll see it in the Files node in the Setup Architecture and you'll also see an Install Files statement.

Is it listed as a purple command (should be) and is its context for installation correct? That is, you haven't dropped it in a condition that's not getting executed for some reason?

Just a few thoughts.

Thanks for the post! Yes it's in the MSI, purple section of code. And in the Add Files GUI. There aren't any conditions applied to whether or not it gets copied. There are 2 other files of the same type that get copied just fine. This one PDF just won't copy to the target directory.

Bill, I can't think of any reason why it wont copy. Could you provide the Install Files statements from the MSI code window and I'll see if I can replicate something when I get home later. As a quick test, suppose you create a new project and copy just those three files and nothing else? A basic setup project will suffice. That might help establish if there is truly a problem with the copying of the files (unlikely) or whether something else in the project is perhaps causing the file copy to get taco'ed.

Well the stripped down test worked. With nothing else in the project I got the file to copy.

Bill, that's good and not so good. As the good detective Sherlock Holmes would say, "this is a two-pipe problem."

You don't have the missing file configured in a feature that is not installing for some reason? In other words are the files in different features or are they all in the same feature.

If you compare the properties of the files in Setup Architecture -> Files node and select a file and right-click Edit File(s) do they appear to have the same settings?

Short of asking you to attach the project file I can't see or think of anything else that could be causing it. At least you can prove that a basic copy is working so I have to wonder what the differences might be.

File settings

Hi,

The default settings are selected in both cases. The target Folder is $TARGETDIR$\\Support in both cases.

Bill,

Are you in a position to attach the project file? I have some spare time tomorrow at work between meetings in the morning so I could have a look then. As for the files you use I could change the pathnames and use other PDF files. It's quite a curious problem you have. If you want to keep your project from public scrutiny I'll send you my email address by PM and we can send the files that way.

The boss

The boss says to give their support a shot first. We're pretty cagey about sending anything outside. Thanks for all your help. I'll post again if support can't figure it out. :)

I fully understand Bill. I'd be interested to know what the problem is.

You will need to provide us with a minimum setup project that reproduces this issue consistently.

How to post it privately

How can I get this to you privately? We have security concerns about postiing code publicly.
