Vista Beta2 Uninstall Problem

Post by dtentori »

Hello, with Vista Beta 2 (UAC disabled/enabled) and IA 5.3 when I uninstall an application the setup process always aborts with this error:

"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance"

Everything is ok with any other platform.

I tried to compare XP vs Vista uninstall logs and I see these differences:

Vista is a beta operating system that is rapidly evolving. Not only does something which works (or doesn't work) in a particular beta of Vista stops working (or starts working) in another beta, many applications, including their installers, may exhibit strange behavior with Vista. This is not due to problems with the applications (or their installers) but problems with Vista itself. In case you were not previously aware, Vista is in the beta stage, which means it is not a finished, production quality operating system. It is not usable in production environments either - the Vista testing license agreement prohibits that.

That said, we haven't had any problems with in-house tests on Vista, however as your error message indicates, it seems something is wrong with the Windows Installer service on your Vista box, and we unfortunately cannot help you troubleshoot these problems for the above reasons at this time.

Vista Error: Windows Installer Service could not be accessed

Post by stevew »

Hi, i am using the production release of Vista. I have two setup projects. One uninstalls fine, the other uninstall fails. This tells me the installer service is installed correctly.

Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, rebuilding, but nothing is correcting the problem. I have also tried as administrator to the local machine and administartor to the domain.

The exact item failing is :
Apply Uninstall (get result into variable SUCCESS)

I notice that this works:

Install/Remove MSI Package $PRODUCTCODE$[REMOVE=ALL] (get result into variable REMOVEOLD)

but that doesn't remove the item from the Add/Remove Programs (now called "Programs And Features") because it is intended to only remove when a reinstall immediately follows.

Hi Steve,

Can you send us a minimal project which illustrates this issue? This way, we don't have to charge you for a support ticket if the problem can be traced to an issue in InstallAware.

Or, you can purchase a support ticket and we can look directly at your own setup.

uninstall

hi, an attempt to build a mini project was not successfull. the problem appears to be only in my project that was intially created on an earlier version of InstallAware. I have discovered that if i recreate my project from scratch then all is working. This is what i have done so i am fine now.

maybe this information will be helpful to others ...

I am having this issue with my installer on Windows 7 64-bit. Did you ever figure out what is causing this? I don't want to have to recreate my installer from scratch.
