Update balloon message issue

I modified the update script so that when a user of my application manually checks for an update, a message box appears telling the user that there are no updates available. Works fine except if the user has configured automatic updates in which case even if my application is not running it leaves the message box popped up in center screen. I don't like this.

As a work around I changed the message box to a message balloon. Now I have the opposite problem. When the user manually checks for updates the message balloon fades away before the average mortal has time to read it. I trippled the timeout setting to 30 seconds but that had no effect.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
