Windows Installer 4.5 Before SQL 2008 Express R2

Hi,

I recently changed my installer to use SQL 2008 Express R2 instead of Service Pack 1. I'm experiencing a strange issue in that the installer correctly states that the user needs to install Windows Installer 4.5 and SQL Server 2008 Express R2 - but then it attempts to install SQL Server 2008 Express without installing Windows Installer - so the install obviosly fails.

Where can I check why this install order is not working or why Windows Installer 4.5 is being skipped (even though it's identified as a prereq)?

Run the setup in the debugger to find out why its acting up, I'd say?

Hi Michael,

I'm running the install on a virtual machine which makes debugging an issue. Have you not encountered something like this before? Are there other things I can try, or instance is there a way to output debugging info from the setup file?

You have the full scripts to the runtime installers, which you may have customized, so the best thing to do is debug the scripts, possibly even directly on the VM in question.

i seem to have this issue going on, too.

did you get it resolved? i can't debug because i have developer edition.

Hi,

Unfortunately the process I followed to correct the issue was to remove all prerequisites and save. Then add them back again. I think somehow the order got messed up. If you can't check the msi script then this is probably your only option.
