Showing progress during SQL Server Express 2008 R2

Postby gurvin_net » Tue Nov 15, 2011 6:53 pm

I am unable to find a way to show progress bar with % completion during SQL Server Express 2008 R2 installation. Please provide some sample code if possible on how to acheive this. Currently I am only able to show marquee but we our users are complaining as they are very annoyed by not seeing any status on completion during sql server express setup and they assume something is wrong with their machine or setup like froze or something. Overall user experience is not good.

Hi,

I am afraid this has nothing to do with IA. We use the (Un)Install MSI Setup plugin in order to install 3rd party setups such as SQL Express.
The installed MSI's are then integrated into IA and any progress is automatically displayed on the currently displayed progress bar.
If there is no progress in the installation, this means that the MSI that you are installing (SQL) does not report progress.

Is there any solution for this? Some sort offake progress that atleast tells user that setup or pc is not frozen and installation is working. We are not experts in setup creation thats one of the reason to buy IA as we didn't wanted to invest resources on Visual studio setup project.

As you might already know SQL server 2008 express takes good 15-20mins to install so its a not a user friendly experience. If our users don't see completion status then we have a problem.....

Hi,

You can set the progress to 50 percent manually and display a message to the user explaining whats happening.

Hello,

We did setup progress to 50% but our user community is not responding well to our installation. Do you have any solution for this yet??

Hi,

You can instead display a label or a messagebox to the users telling them what is happening.
