web update fails to download

Postby scotteb » Fri Sep 21, 2012 3:08 pm

I am using IA Studio 12. I built an updated install package for a product (updated Product Version and generated new Revision Code). I added the appropriate entries to the Update Packs and Versions panels. I depolyed update.ini and the new install package to my web server.

On a computer (XP) with the prior release installed, I select Check for Updates from the menu. The InstallAware Wizard finds the update and I can check the title to download (there is only one). Now - at this point (before clicking "Download") the user's temp folder has an \mia1 subfolder full of install files from the prior release (dfm, dll, miaf, msi, etc.) and the new updates.ini file. Not sure if this is normal or not (never had to pay this much attention to the update process before) but wanted to mention it.

Back to the InstallAware Wizard dialog. I select Download and immediately the Details panel populates with "18.3.02 [download was unsuccessful]". BTW, the Install button is still enabled (but simply pops up a dilaog informing the user to "Please select some updates to install").

I can copy the entry from the INI file to my browser and the file downloads - here is update.ini:

Code: Select all

[Update Packs for Versions]
18.3.01=18.3.02
[18.3.02]
URL=URL=http://updates.frankcohengroup.com/ntiscci/CCEdit_Install_183002.exe
Description=Allow user to easily add multiple, individual codes to the multi-edit list
Reboot=No
Silent=No
Parameters=

Any ideas?

URL=URL=http://updates.frankcohengroup.com/ntiscci/CCEdit_Install_183002.exe

I finally noticed that the copy and paste of the download location from a prio INI file to the IDE resulted in the text "URL=" being repeated, thus not a valid line in the INI file. Correcting that has resolved the issue.

I am having a similar problem, but not a similar solution

I have created a version 0004 and the updates.ini reads

Code: Select all

[Update Packs for Versions]
2012.501.0004=Recommended updates for v0004
[Recommended updates for v0004]
URL=http://192.168.210.223/ssupdates/ROMScalesServerSetup_v0005.exe
Description=lots of new features from 004 to 005
Reboot=No
Silent=Yes
Parameters=

The main problem I am seeing is that when the dialog bo comes up
"Choose Updates to install"
The new update is there and is selectable. When I click "Install", the dialog box closes and "looks" like an installation is going to start. In stead, when I open the update dialog from the task bar, it says "Recommended updates for v0004 [download was unsuccessful]

But, if i call the URL directly, it updates nicely. Can you help?

Dear User,

Are you sure the URL you entered doesn't contain any unwanted leading space?

Regards.

Hi Francesco, thanks for reading my post.

As you can see from my posted code, the URL has no spaces. If I cut-and-paste from the installaware development machine to the browser on the target client machine, it runs fine. Only when it's called from within the automatic update process (or the link under c:\windows\Installer\<original product name> Updates for All Users.lnk does it fail.

If I want to add "debug messages", I have to change my base installer program, then have it spit out msg box messages as it is running, correct me if I'm wrong, because the first setup.exe is the one that goes into "web update mode" and downloads the new version and installs it, correct?

Dear Paul,

yes, you can use a MeassageBox (or more MessageBoxes) at runtime to verify variables value.
