Changing a string

Postby GregS » Wed Mar 27, 2013 10:23 am

This is a problem we haven't been able to figure out. If we add a new string to our InstallAware project (say to one of the forms) and then use Localize to save the string to the translations files, the new string gets written into all the translation files properly. But when we edit an existing string, the updated string gets written into the translations.Original file but does not get written into the translations.English file. The English file still has the old string, and if we then import the translations back, the old string still is displayed on the form at run-time.

I'm sure this is because when we export we tell it to preserve existing translations. However, if we tell it to overwrite existing translations then we lose ALL our translated strings in non-English languages we support.

It's as if when we export changes, it recognizes additions and deletions of strings as changes, but does not recognize changes to existing strings as being changes.

We've been working around this by deleting the string we want to change, doing a localization export/import, and then adding the string back in and localizing again. But this is clumsy and painful. Are we missing something obvious?

We're using InstallAware 8 in our production code, but I'm currently evaluating InstallAware 15 in preparation for an upgrade and I see that the same behavior is still present there.

Thanks
Greg S.

Dear Greg,

The InstallAware translation wizard works in this way and with the tool, you can choose to preserve or to overwrite existing translations only.

I may suggest you to have a look ot our plug-in forum threads.
You can find some third party tools with the ability to handle and share, localized strings with different projects.

Hope this helps you.

Regards.
