InstallAware are able to copy files not included it install

Postby DamianRM » Fri Nov 29, 2013 1:49 am

Dear InstallAware support team

Currently we use Wise 7, but we are looking for a new installer programs .Our product is a Net 3.5 WinForm application and I’m sure you InstallAware could do the job fine, but I’m looking for some additional feature.

When a user installs and starts my application for the first time, he get a list with available servers, this list is read from 2 files that install package copied to its computer during install process. So for different customers I need to apply different version of these 2 files in the install package.

Now with Wise 7 I make full recompile of all installation for every customers with its own 2 files and that is the problem. It works, but take many time, when I have 100+ customers will be almost impossible. So I need these 2 files to be outside of the install package, like additional files and install software to read and deploy them. Then I’ll be able to recompile only once installation and manually replace the specific files /located at the same directory where is the install file/

I hope I explained clearly what I’m searching for. Could you advice me how can I solve this question with your InstallAware?

And like an option – if it is possible I prefer to hide at all these 2 files from customers – they to be built in .exe file or some other …

I’m waiting your answer.

Regards, Damyan Minchev

Dear Damyan,

you could create a standard package that installs all your files, including a dummy version of those 2 files ( ... supposing that their file names are kept identical). Then create a small dummy installer, that only replaces those files on target system with the effective file version for each customer.

With this approach you have only to re-generate the small dummy installer, while the effective installer package remains the same for all your installation.
This small installer should not run an effective product installation, but only to copy those file on the target machine.

Optionally, you can decide if this small installer requires a minimal UI or even nothing at all.
