.NET Framework 4.5

Postby Aaron Young » Tue Jun 17, 2014 1:40 pm

I'm in the process of upgrading our installations to distribute .NET Framework 4.5 instead of 4.0 and I'm running into a problem while testing the
installation of the prerequisite on a 64-bit Windows 7 Pro (VMWare.) virtual machine.

The error occurs during the start of the installation of .NET Framework 4.5 (x64) - (I haven't tried x86 yet.)

The full error is:

"Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 could not be installed. The system
cannot find the path specified

Please use Windows Update to manually install this update on your
system.

Setup cannot continue."

If I attempt to run the "setup.exe" in the unpacked filebag (to get more info.),
I get a .NET setup error saying that "You cannot use this setup program to install the .NET Framework."

I can only surmise from the MSDN article;

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh925569(v=vs.110).aspx

that the issue has something to do with .NET 4.5.1 being available as an Important update in Windows Update,
though I've taken steps to make sure .NET 4.5 is not installed, all other Windows Updates have been applied and .NET 3.5 and 4.0 are installed.

If I try to install .NET 4.5 from Microsoft's Web Installer or Windows update, it installs fine.

Is this a bug in InstallAwares' ".NET Framework 4.5" redistribution as a result of the recent(ish) release of .NET 4.5.1 as a Windows Update,
or is there something else I'm missing?

Regards,

- Aaron.

Update: .NET Framework 4.5

Postby Aaron Young » Tue Jun 17, 2014 1:58 pm

I found if I manually run the MSI within the unpacked filebag passing the same command line arguments the script is passing (excluding the "VSEXTUI=1")
then the install works.

"C:\Windows\System32\msiexec.exe /i NetFx_Full_x64.msi TRANSFORMS=netfx45_aip_x64.mst"

So I no longer think it may be related to the Windows Update availability.
It certainly appears to be an InstallAware issue - so why would it be failing to install this package?

Resolved: .NET Framework 4.5

Postby Aaron Young » Wed Jun 18, 2014 6:44 am

It looks like I've figured out a way to resolve the issue...

I tried recreating the "Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 (x64)" 7zip file on my build machine which happens to be running on a 32-bit version of the Windows 7 Pro. operating system.
This version of the file was approximately 24KB larger than the one I generated on my development machine which is running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Pro.

This version of the file installs just fine, no error message.

I'm not going to spend any more time investigating this as it appears either there's a problem with the installation of InstallAware on my development machine (which seems
unlikely given the prerequisite worked fine when run manually), or there's an issue with generating web block 7zip packages on 64-bit operating systems for use with 32-bit generated installers.

Dear Aaron,

I am happy you finally solved your problem.
At the same time, I can assure you that doesn't exist any problem with using those runtimes (Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 (x64)) if used to build a project with a x64 machine. I use exactly a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Pro OS with my development machine.

Very probably it exist a problem with your machine ... regrettably.
