.Net Framework 5.2 too big?

Postby MartinIW » Mon Apr 04, 2016 9:10 am

Hello,

we have now updated our product to use .NET Framework 5.2. For this reason we use the InstallAware X3 - Package that you deliver for us.
Now we have the problem that our Installer with all prerequisites doesnt fit any longer on a notmal DVD 4.7GiB.
After search what uses all the room i found .NET 4.5 Package with a lot of Windows Updates (.msu-Files) in its folder. It totally came up to nearly 1.7GiB????
So now my questtion. Is it really neccessary to deliver all there windows updates (more than 1GiB can be saved if we cut them off)??
Is there a way to get a smaler package for installing .NET 4.5???

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Dear Martin,

what you see in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallAware X3\runtimes\net452_full" folder, it's the uncompressed layout of the official ".Net Framework 4.5.2" installer. We don't include any additional file to the layout image and due of this, you should ask this question to Microsoft directly.
For what I can tell, all those files are necessary to correctly handle the installation on the different and allowed targets.

Anyway once compressed, installAware produces a ".Net Framework 4.5.2" archive which is smaller of the original compressed ".Net Framework 4.5.2" installer.

Hope this helps you.

Hmm i mean this files here:
Unbenannt.PNG
Unbenannt.PNG (97.47 KiB) Viewed 5427 times

Maybe we will no longer deliver CD/DVD-format and compress anything to a single .exe which in my opinion needs a lot of time when installing because first you need the time to decompress everything to harddrive first before installing.
If there is no other way i need to put the web-installer into a package and deliver this?
I mean better the customer loads what he needs from the internet than saying "Sorry you need to have a BluRay-drive to install our demosoftware.".

Greetings,
Martin

Hello again,

I now have tried something different. In order to get the dvd smaler i took the whole folder net452_full from runtimes and zipped it with 7zip.
then i manually changed the setup script like the way it is when installing sql-server when it first unzipps the files and then installes from a different location.
It looks like this will work and we have won about 1GB free space on the DVD. Hmm ok the customer have to wait about 10 seconds to unzipp all the files first, but thats ok for us.

I hope this is a right way to handle something like this?

Greetings,
Martin

Dear Martin,

you may build your package as Compressed Web-Based Exe. Then distribute the setup.exe along all the generated Web Media Blocks (7zip files).
If the setup.exe gets executed from the same folder where also the various Web Media Blocks are stored, the installer will use those WMBs which are locally available in place to download them.
