What's Upgrades Product with Product Code ?

In the Project Options there is a field labelled:

Upgrade Product with Product Code:

the manual say to put here a previous version, but what InstallaWare do with it ?
I've think it remove the product with that product code, but it dosn't do this.

so what is it ?
