I have a project that I would like to create a series of patches for.
The problem is that the name of the project was changed. The only reason that the project name was changed was for clarity purposes when the installation is displayed in the Windows 'Add/Remove' programs list.
Upon reading the patching documentation, the section 'Patch Requirements' states that a patch will only work if the original projects have the following criteria:
>same upgrade code
>same product code
>different revision code
Ok, that makes sense. However when I read further along in the section entitled 'When Not to Use a Patch' I find the following statement:
"The patch references and the patch project must have the same product name."
The same 'Product Name'? What happens if a installation developer discovers a typo in the Product Name title and corrects it, or in my case changes the title in order to simplify the user experience?
If this is true can someone please advise on how I can make a simple change to the 'Product Name' and still be able to have patches that work?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Steve,
Sorry, it seems we missed your question in September. OK here is the deal. For patching the two installers "must" have the same product name. If they don't, when patching you will be prompt for original sources installation, and since there are no original sources for a project with the name in the patch, it will not work. In this case, what you need to do is an upgrade and not a patch. An upgrade will uninstall the previous installation, and will make a new install with the new name. The upgrade should have:
same upgrade code
same product code
different revision code
