I'm attempting to install programs with installations made with IA 5.3 under the newest Windows Vista Beta 2 (Build 5384) using an administrator account. Vista challenges administrators who attempt to do anything that requires admin privileges via UAC (User Account Control) for permission to continue. My installation requires admin account to run, and that part gets checked OK. Previous versions of Vista have allowed installations such as this without problems.
With this version of Vista there is a problem when the Windows Installer runs (using MS Win Installer 3.0). I'm (of course) trying to install for all users. I get an Error dialog with the message "You do not have sufficient privileges to complete this installation for all users of the machine. Log on as administrator and then retry this installation." This should not occur, as the account is an administrator. I might have expected a UAC panel for permission, but I think the Error dialog is a mistake. What I don't know is where the problem is (other than working with a Beta OS).
Is it something I can control, is it something Vista is doing wrong, or is there some miscommunication among Vista/Windows Installer/InstallAware about being an administrator but requiring a UAC Panel permission (versus being an admin or not)?
If anyone else is working with the latest Beta 2 Vista, let me know how things are working and if installations are working: How?
Thanks in advance,
Jon
IA 5.3 and Win Vista Beta 2 (bld 5384) and UAC panel as Admn
First of all, non-RTM OS's etc, are not supported officially by InstallAWARE Corporation. However, if you use the Group Policy method to create an .msi single file, i believe it will work fine..Otherwise, just remove the Administrative check from the InstallAWARE project, as Vista won't allow you no matter what you do, to install it, if you are not an actuall administrator.

Vista betas have been quite interesting. For instance, beta 1 of Vista broke ALL Windows Installer setups with a bogus error message, saying the Windows Installer service terminated unexpectedly. This happened to InstallAware, as well as InstallShield, Wise, and Orca MSI setups. Further tech refreshes of Vista (after beta 1 and before beta 2) resolved this problem.
InstallAware is Vista ready and your InstallAware setups will work with the final version of Vista when it ships without requiring any changes. Unfortunately, we may not be able to support interim releases.

Also FYI I just walked over to our Vista B2 machine and was able to install my favorite desktop companion - Rubber Ducky - just fine.

Was this in installation for "All Users"? Is this Build 5384? Unfortunately, the Version I have access to from my MSDN account is Windows Vista Home Basic. I believe the previous builds that did work were not so restricted a version. DOH! I forgot to request keys... I will install higher versions of Vista and report back. I would want the programs I install to work on any of the Vista versions, so the installation needs to work on all versions of Vista.
I'd like to test a small installation package that is known to work with Vista on my target computer.
I have installed Computer Associates Anti-virus product, as suggested by this version of Vista itself. Might this cause a problem?
I'm also attempting to install on Virtual-PC's: we don't have the money for actual physical PC's for testing.
I have not yet been able to install for all users. The admin check _AT THE BEGINNING_ of the installation works OK. Installation proceeds up to the point where All Users is invoked by Windows Installer. At that point I get an error advising me that I do not have admin privileges to install under all users, however I AM using an Admin account.
I don't want to remove the Admin check. I'm needing to test installation and running of several programs on Win 2000, Win XP, Win Server 2003, and Win Vista. I need to check for admin privileges on some of these. I don't want to produce separate installations for each OS: This defeats the purpose of using an installation program such as InstallAware.<sigh>

I tried the Group Policy Wizard, but got the error "Program too big to fit in memory" message when I invoked the installation on the target machine. I'm not running a virtual Active Directory Forest with Virtual PCs. OUCH! OK. I renamed the target as an MSI rather than an EXE and the installation proceeded up to the point where it tried to access the target installation directory, then gave the error:
The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory:
C:\\Program Files\\MyFirm. The installation cannot continue. Log on as
administrator or contact your system administrator.
where my target installation folder is C:\\Program Files\\MyFirm\\MyProg\\.
I'm wanting to upgrade to the latest version of IA, but I need to find out if the installations will work as needed before committing...

I don't think Vista builds behave differently with respect to the admin stuff SKU-wise, do they?
I really think you're sort of throwing your time away on this, chasing phantom bugs...but do let me know if there's anything specific I can help!

You are correct there. I spent the day installing Windows Vista Business under Virtual PC. After installation, while validating installation, I still get the "You do not have sufficient privileges to complete this installation for all users". Basically this began happening with the latest build of Vista, nothing in the IA side changed from when it did work.
What I've attempted to do is follow up on the hints Gizm0 and you have suggested. Nothing has worked.
I'll attempt IA version 5.31, and any later versions that I can.
I really need to spend some time on real project effort. This is killing me.

Well, I think you indeed need to give Vista a break and get more productive
