Arrow keys in dialog text box

Postby PaavoN » Thu Apr 24, 2014 6:21 am

Hi

Is it just me or is anybody else experiencing problems when trying to use arrow keys in a text box in a dialog.
I upgraded from IA15 to IA18 and now arrow keys seems to fire the next/previous buttons instead of just
moving from right or left in a text box ...

PaavoN,

Did you try creating a new project based on a basic template? I did, and when I navigated to a form containing two text boxes the arrow keys worked only within the text box I was on. I didn't experience any jumping to the navigation buttons.

Hi

I created a new installer from the "basic setup" template and the result is the same: arrow keys do not work as expected.
Check the attached project with an compiled exe.

Very weird. I run your setup exe in the zip file and, yes, I see what you mean. The dialog containing the two text boxes does indeed "snap" to the action on the buttons like you described. I renamed your Release folder and created a new single file. I run that setup exe and everything behaves normally again.

I then noticed that I don't have 18 installed at work, only version 17 so I wonder if it's a version 18 problem only?

I will install the latest build of 18 which I think is 18.05 and I'll see what happens. I'll come back with an answer later this morning if installing 18.05 replicates your issue. But yes, your exe is a "problem" but mine built with version 17 is not. :?:

PaavoN,

It definitely seems to be a problem with 18.05. What worked when built with version 17 now behaves as you experienced. We'll have to let Francesco investigate it for us.

Thanks bokkie

That's what I was afraid of... Sometimes I really wonder the quality of testing of the product ...
Well, as a developer in a software company I know the problems of testing all the possibilities.
Let's hope that this annoying bug will soon be fixed or there is a workaround.

I do have some customised dialogs at home which I use once in a while. I don't know if they will have the same problem but I suspect it's possible. For me, being able to move left and right in a textbox is vital. I'm sure if Francesco can replicate it too he'll be well placed to advise the team. Generally, they are quick to fix operational problems so I like to think we'll have a resolution soon but like you, I'm just a user. :D

Like you, I'm a developer but one thing puzzles me; what does this word "testing" mean that you referred to? I always thought, that if the code compiled without errors it was a green light to go "live".

Dear PaavoN,

... just added to our fix list!

About your: "... Sometimes I really wonder the quality of testing of the product ...".

Do you really believe that we just give away the product without producing a quality test?

If you are a developer you should know that even performing the stronger debug/quality test, there will be always something not observed.

Last but not least; due the fact that at Garmin they sure know how to release fast and often .... which it seems to imply that we are not able to do the same ... we are tempted to postpone the issue of this specific possible fix ... to ... maybe one day 8) .

Dear FrancescoT

As a developer I surely know that there will always be bugs left no matter what you do.
Sorry for being rude, today is not one of the best days of my life either.
We had to release today our product despite that bug in the installer...

What I meant with Garmin is that they are not by any means better than the rest of us.
Their firmwares has been released and then withdrawn within a few days because of
a total freezing of the handheld, etc....

Have a nice and relaxing weekend :)

No amount of testing could have saved Apple's arse when their mapping app failed. Remember the day Tim Cook had to grovel in the landfill site looking for a big hole to crawl into? Their attitude was we think Google is rubbish but in the interim their maps are the best you can use until we fix our pile of landfill deposit which they never really did if I recall correctly?

If it takes IA one day to fix and deliver then I'm more than happy with the outcome. :)
