Why are there no variables allowed in path for shortcut icons?
If I want to use an icon in a file from the target directory I can't know upfront
what directory this will be.
I don't see a compelling reason why not to use variables.
Why no variables in path for shortcut icons?
You don't need to use variables for that.
You click to select an icon, you click on the TARGETDIR directory/folder and choose the ico file from the files you have selected to be placed on TARGETDIR.

I think there must be a misunderstanding. When I click on the button to the
right of the edit field with the label "Icon File Path (no variables allowed):"
a normal open dialog with the title "Icon File" opens, not the TargetDir dialog.
That would be nice but it isn't so.
See attached image.

No, I'm not talking about the setup icon. There is no problem with that, and obviously there
isn't a path to be put in an edit field, neither with nor without a variable.
Did you have a look at the picture I attached? It's the icon for a shortcut what I need.
And there variables are not allowed. But how can I select a fixed path if I don't know
where our application will be installed?

But still, the icons for the shortcuts can be from a file that is not included in the project... I'm pointing it to an .ico file on my local drive and that file is not referenced anywhere else in my project - still it is used as a shortcut icon on the target system - dont know why, but it works...

At the very beginning (working with IA 6.4) I have done that by mistake and it didn't work.
I tried it again, and it did. IA actually includes that icon into the setup and writes it to the
WINDOWS\\Installer directory.
Can't say that I like that, but it works. I'd still would like to have the option to use variables
and get the icon from a file that is actually part of my intended installation instead of filling
up the system drive with even more cryptic folders that just contain one icon.
Anyway, thank you for your help
