We have two products which are installed using InstallAware. If product A is installed without installing product B (or vice-versa), everything is fine. However, if the either product is installed after the other, the installation of the second fails. The installation of product A simply displays a dialog stating "Error" (that's it, nothing else), while product B's failure is a little more helpful. I will concentrate on the latter.
The message I get during the installation of product B is "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable". What I noticed is that the miaXXX.tmp folder mentioned in the error dialog actually does NOT exist! It seems that somehow, under certain circumstances, the path of the msi file is getting confused *but only when the other product has been already installed* (otherwise there is no problem). In case it is relevant, these two products share a common assembly that goes in the GAC.
Note that the installation of the product B actually succeeds despite the error messages declaring failure, and can be uninstalled too.
In a particular attempt to install product B, my temp dir (C:\\Documents and Settings\\Alex\\Local Settings\\Temp) had two folders, mia1 and mia143.tmp. The dialog with the "The feature..." message gives the path to the msi package as being "C:\\DOCUME~1\\Alex\\LOCALS~1\\Temp\\mia108.tmp\\data\\". Notice that it states mia108.tmp as the temp folder, which is not any one of the two that actually existed dyring this particular installation.
Now if I try installing again, the two temp folders become mia1 and mia144.tmp. BUT, the dialog again states that it expects the msi to be in the mia108.tmp folder. If it's of any use, I can send you the installation's log file. IA 7.0 and WinXP used.
Could this issue be caused by something that we have done in our installation (although it's pretty straight forward), or is it a bug? Please help!
Cannot install due to temporary folder confusion
