Install Service don't work with Relative paths!!

Post by zims »

When using the Install File command it is possible to use Compiler Variables to specify a relative path to the file.

My problem is that Install Service don't work with Compiler variables, I dont get any errors while compiling but when running the setup I get an error.

I have read about this on the forum and many people have the same problem, but I have not found any solution.

I need to be able to run automated builds for my Installer and without relatives paths that is not possible.

Anyone have a solution or know when IA will fix this?

Do you have a simple service, such as a single file service, so you can create a very simple project which illustrates this problem and send it over to us?

Hi CandiceJones and thanks for you quick answer.

I have attached a zip file with a sample project. The project contains 1 file that I try to install with the Install Service command.

In the field Service File i have written the following:
#PROJDIR#\\..\\Bin\\Mapaz.ERP.6.BackupService.exe

As you can see in the picture "Build Progress.jpg" the file is included in the build without any problems.

But when running the setup I get an error message that says "The folder path ".." contains an invalid character." (se the picutre "Error message.jpg")

If I change the Install Service command to a Install File and use the same path (#PROJDIR#\\..\\Bin\\Mapaz.ERP.6.BackupService.exe) it works without problem.

Both pictures that I talked about abow are included in the attached ZIP file as the are the sample project.

The zip fold constist of the following folders:
\\InstallServiceTest
\\InstallServiceTest\\Bin
\\InstallServiceTest\\Setup Project

The folder "\\InstallServiceTest\\Setup Project" holds the IA project.
The folder "\\InstallServiceTest\\Bin" hols the service file to install.

Ah, I see. You're not only using compiler variables but also relative paths. We do not support relative paths anywhere. They might work in some places, but officially they are not supported.

Does this problem go away when you remove the relative path and use just the compiler variable?

When I remove the ".." from the path and point to a folder "under" the project folder it works.

So if I understand you correctly it is not a bug that Install Service cant handle relative paths when Install Files can handeld it?

If this is not a bug then I would like to ask you to implement this feature in Install Service becuase I (and alot of other people here on the forum) realy need a feature like this, when trying to automate builds it is important.

I guess the only sulotion I have right now is to create a custom compiler variable that points to a folder so that I don't have to use "..", then I can specify this custom varible when running my automated build.

Even if your answer was not what I wished I have to thank you for you quick answers. I also would like to inform you that I realy like IA. I have been trying to migrate from InstallShield to IA and I have so far migrated 80% without only 2 problems.

If I am successful with the last 20% I guess we will move from Install Shield for good.

Just for your information I just noticed that it is not only the Install Service command that has this problem. If you use Install File and use ".." in the path to the file then you get the same problem when you run a "web" compiled setp. A UnCompressed setup works fine with Install Files.

As has been mentioned before, relative paths are currently not supported anywhere in the product. You should use compiler variables instead. If relative paths work for you anywhere, its just luck :)
