Web based install - dynamically changing web location

Post by CFConner »

I have a need to dynamically change the location of the web based installation location. Basically some of our customers have 100+ workstations and instead of us hosting the downloads of our runtimes, we would like to put the runtimes on THEIR web server so that when we run the setup.exe -> I can read in the configuration of where to pull the updates from.

I looked in the help file on variables - so can I dynamically - for purposes of this example - let us use the 3.5 Framework SP1 that is now included. Could I change the variable $NET351_FILEBAG$ to point to the new URL location that I want to use in the setup.exe ?

What you want to edit is the web media block declaration - each of them contain the data in a web build. You can use variables and specify multiple download URLs (via multiple variables) inside the web media block declarations. This will achieve exactly what you want and also provide redundancy with multiple download URLs in case one of the URLs fail.

Testing under different environments

Post by JeffTucker »

We have Dev, QA, Staging and Live environments and would like to have different search URLs for each environment for each of the web media blocks (excluding the other environments). This is not a redundancy issue, but rather one of testing and promotion of the codebase. Is there a way to do this?

You bet! Use variables as part of your weblock URL's and assign them whatever URL you wish at runtime.
