Switch from Single File to Web Deploy and now slower

Post by colnjackman »

Hi

I took the recommendation for this switch so that users will be able to patch easier in the future (not have to look for original media/download) and switched from Single File to Web Deploy, but only have one block so it is still one file.

I see the exact same behavior as with the Single file with one exception.

1. Decompress File - 35 sec
2. Prepare Wizard - 2 sec
3. Wizard comes up

1. Decompress File - 35 sec
2. Prepare wizard - 2 sec
3.5 - Nothing shows - 50 sec
3. Wizard comes up

As you can see, It looks pretty bad to the end user if the uncompress takes 35 sec and then (I am assuming this) a copy takes 50 sec. Also there is no status during this. The only way you can tell it's running is because I can hear the hard drive churning. All screens are gone.

Is there any way around this. I would really like to use the Web Deploy option so that the user would not have to search for original install in order to upgrade, patch, etc.

Even to bring up the first dialog box and have the user interact with the install while it is copying would be OK.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks
Colin

The nothing shows part doesn't make sense. This doesn't align with our own testing. Web media blocks are not expanded until its showtime - i.e. the script is running.

Does this reproduce with InstallAware template projects?

I am still seeing this behavior and I finally got time to re-create the install from scratch using the Basic Setup. This is a real blocker as we are trying to create an installer that can be patched without the original install having to be found. Can I send you my mia file or something like that so you can try and reproduce?

You need to pinpoint exactly where the problem is.

OK, I have it pinpointed. I recreated my install one line (or almost one line) at a time and it is the File Bag.

I have a File Bag defined that contains one very small bat file. When I don't have this defined, there is no hang but when I uncomment it, it hangs for the extra ~30 sec after extraction.

I really need this functionality in my install as I need to run this bat at the very beginning of the install. Is there anything that can be done OR another way around this.

Thanks

I just found a workaround for my situation. I added the bat file as a support file and just call the bat file using $SUPPORTDIR$\\xxx.bat

But the File Bag still does not work
