SQL Express 2008 SP1 update

Post by tpitts »

Microsoft released SP1 for SQL 2008 this week:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 500f6027ff

Can someone provide a new expressx.7zip file to update the MS SQL Express plug-in file? Or provide instructions on how to build it myself?

I tried following the instructions for SQL 2005 here:
http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2936

But the structure of the files in the 2008 SP1 installer do not match those in the expressx.7zip. So the steps for rebuilding the file with SP1 must be different for 2008.

Thanks.

I'd extract the existing file for v2008, and then replace it with a similar file for v2008 service pack 1. The process should be similar as to the v2005 workflow.

My point is the process is not the same as the 2005 workflow. The file SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe contains 622 files named: _sfx_0000._p through _sfx_0621._p. So the instructions for extracting these files out is different than simply running 7zip to get to the files. There has to be some additional step to extract these .p files out to get to the uncompressed files that make up expressx.7zip.

For now, I've just created a File Bag containing SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe and that works fine. (But it has worse compression, so the file the user has to download is much larger.)

There's no binaries, no MSI files, no EXE's to run the actual setup?

The SQL Server installer extracts all the files to a temporary folder, then uncompresses the .p files in place, deletes the .p files, then runs setup.exe.

So in order to create a file comparable to the old expressx.7zip, you'd have to extract the .p files also. But I don't know what process to use to do this. I guess you could just capture the files from a machine that was in the process of installing, after the .p files have been extracted by the Microsoft installer.
