REG_EXPAND_SZ How can I add a registry entry of this type?

Thanks. So the SZ_EXPAND option works but the other options fail, I take it?

The regexpand is not working. Look at the entry near the top that shows the correct path. Then, near the bottom is a correct one that way entered via merge with a registry file. Everything else is correct but the entry which looks like #%#xC:\\MasterLayout\\STARTUP\\ is what is being written by the installer. So, no it's not working.
