Sporadic \"Unable to load plug-in library\" error

Post by jsmith »

Since upgrading to IA 9.06, we have seen some odd behavior just a couple of times. When a user runs the single-exe installer to upgrade from the previous day's build to the current day's build, the installer behaves erratically.

First - behind the scenes our Welcome dialog has labels that contain the text for a first-time installation, and it has labels for upgrades. Which set it shows depends on the value of $NEEDSUPGRADE$. What the user has seen is the Welcome dialog shows both sets of labels. I have attached a screen shot of what the user actually saw when running the installer to perform an upgrade. The screen shot is not from the Dialog Editor; it's what was actually seen.

Next - the user attempted to continue with the upgrade, but it failed shortly thereafter with:
Unable to load plug-in library. Please rebuild your project and make sure all required plug-ins are installed.

Action skipped.
It doesn't say which plugin failed to load. He exited the installer wizard and launched it again. The next time none of these problems occurred and his upgrade was successful.

Has anything like this been seen by IA's internal testing or by anyone else in this community? It's disconcerting that the installer could sporadically fail like this. Luckily, it was one of our QA engineers that found this and not one of our customers.

Thanks!

Very odd. Are there any AV or other software that might be nuking files at random? Can you reproduce this on a clean VM with no software at all?

Most of the time, testers report such issues but they are accidentally doing other things at the same time which can delete files...although they might not know about it at the time.
