Runtime error: Stream write error

Post by jsmith »

We have seen an instance where an upgrade of our product fails with
Runtime error in setup script: Source
File: <our> Line Number: 756 Stream write error
What would cause this? Is there anything we can do to avoid this happening in the future?

Thanks.

Hmm - you should only see that if a low level stream write failed - such as writing to the hard disk ...

I don't suppose you have a log of the install available? This would help is identify the original cause.

Thanks for replying, Andy. We do not have a log of the installation that failed. I do see in the event log at the time of the failure that the removal of the old version, installation of the new version, and finalization of the MSI transaction all occurred without any MSI errors.

What might IA be writing to disk after the installation completed? It seems the error occurred very late in the process.

No, it's only happened this one time. But we have seen other runtime errors since upgrading to IA9:

We never had any of these sorts of problems with IA8.

Hmm - I'll review the change logs and see if anything jumps out at me.

I should mention that line 756 of our script is "Apply Install." I'm not sure if this means the failure is out of IA's hands, that IA is just reporting a failure that MSI reported to it.

All the actual queued actions are executed when the engine hits the Apply Install, so in theory it could be anything in the execution queue causing the bug.

Unfortunatly I haven't found anything in the change log, but will keep looking!

I need to say that jsmith is not alone with this issue.
Our QA also experienced it once on Win XP test machine. Installer crashed with
“Runtime error in setup script:
Source file: <our> Line number: 839
Stream write error”
Line 839 in this script is “Apply Install”. Our product files and even service were installed (despite the crash), but all custom action after “Apply Install” weren’t done of course.
The problem is that QA saw it only once, issue was not reproduced anymore. So I don’t have much info.

But this topic is quite old. Is there any update on the issue lately?
