\"Out of memory\"

Post by joltman »

Hi we have an installbae of roughly 170.000 users.
we have one(1) user reporting that the installer runs out of memory.
Of course there maybe many more of our users experiencing this and not calling it in...

Im thinking this is a fluke but would still like to ask you if you have seen this problem before and what it could be.

The users runs an intelcore2duo with 2gb of ram so the ram should not be an issue.

best regards

The user could really be out of memory, depending on the number of applications they were running at the time of the error.

Its simply impossible to provide any additional guidance on these kinds of generic errors when the generic error message is pretty clear and you have not been able to reproduce the error in-house.

Hi, I fully understand that, Im grasping at straws here. Are there any such things as error logs in installaware?

Have you tried rebooting the user machine in safe mode and then run the installation? I don't know if you can run the installation like that but it might help to form some ideas about what is happening.

We have not tried that, i will ask the customer to do so and get back to you.

Are there any applications or services running at the time of the installation that could consume memory which Michael alluded to? Something that is fired up when the system reboots such as a Run reference in the registry?

Have you asked the user to close all other open applications? Ditto for any applications running as a service which are not OS-specific?

I presume there is ample paging space as well?

I am also getting some "Out of Memory" garbage but for a different program that was mentioned in this thread. I found this thread through Google.

I am trying to install LiveZilla 3.1.8.3 and I already installed 3.1.8.1 before so InstallAware shouldn't be giving me any errors for memory.

However to make it absolutely certain I stopped all of my start up programs and tried again...still erroring with memory garbage.

I've even tried to run the installer sandboxed and it continues with this annoying memory crap.

I know for a fact I have PLENTY of memory as my physical memory is 4GB and using msinfo32 to check, I have 2.21GB completely free to do whatever. The 2.21GB is the amount WITH all of my startup programs running and including my browser.

Is there a solution to this so I can just make it not check memory? Since it is obviously not doing it right.

You will need to take that up with the company direct. Sorry.

I'm encountering the exact same "Out of memory" error with a couple of my customers over the last month or so.
Our userbase is much smaller (in the tens rather than thousands) so I put the first report down as something specific to them but with the second report I'm more concerned.

During initial installation the installer is working perfectly. What seems to be causing the problem is the auto-update check the following week.
Note also, there is presently not even an update available - so it is simply the checking process itself that is causing the problem.

I have customised the update script very slightly so its quite possible the problem is entirely of my doing! :)
However, my changes are fairly minor (to setup scheduling at end of installation rather than upon reboot). The actual checking part of the script is unchanged.

I'm going to try to debug this problem further but wondering if anyone else is expericing similar problems with the update routines?

Dear Obliterator,

I was not able to reproduce the situation you are depicting in-house. Can you attach (or send to [email protected]) the project you are working on along with instructions on how to reproduce this situation?

Thanks,
