Issues with Quick Time Pre-req

Post by MarkMelanson »

I am new to InstallAware and am having an issue. I am trying to install Quicktime Alternative as a pre-req. I may be inserting the code in the wrong place and/or maybe I'm just slow. ;-)

I am inserting the code at line 43 after Set Variable MAINTENANCE to FALSE and getting an error on compile "Error during build: At least one Web Media Block must be defined before installation commands that may require media". I am confused since I am including the file I am calling in the package and I don't use the Web Update stuff at all.

Code: Select all

Read Registry Key HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\QTAlternative\\installdir into CHECKQT
    if Variable CHECKQT Equals
Read Registry Key HKLM\\Software\\Apple Computer, Inc.\\QuickTime\\InstallDir into CHECKQT
      if Variable CHECKQT Equals
Set Variable PROGRESSTEXT to Installing Quicktime Alternative v2.60
        Create Folder $PROGRAMFILES$\\dk interactive learning
Install Files #PROJDIR#\\World Explorer Network Edition files\\program files\\dk interactive learning\\quicktimealt260.exe to $PROGRAMFILES$\\dk interactive learning
Run Program $PROGRAMFILES$\\dk interactive learning\\quicktimealt260.exe /VERYSILENT (WAIT, get result into variable QTRESULT)
Delete Files $PROGRAMFILES$\\dk interactive learning\\quicktimealt260.exe (when installing)
      end
    end

Your code will not work outside a web media block due to you using the Install Files command. It has to be in a Web Media block. You can run your QuickTime check in the pre-req section, but set a flag. Then in the media block section, check for the value of the flag and if it is True, install the quicktimealt260.exe. After Apply Install, then you can run the quicktimealt260.exe installer.

May I suggest making the QuickTime installer a support file, to avoid having to place it on the user's system, running it, then deleting it. It will not be deleted when the installer is executed for the first time.

My product requires QuickTime to exist on our user's system. So before my installer installs, I check for QuickTime, and if it exists, I run the QuickTime setup that sits next to my installer, without having to place it on the user's system. Here is the code I use.

Code: Select all

Set Variable QTKEY to
Check Registry Key HKLM\\Software\\Apple Computer, Inc.\\QuickTime\\ into QTKEY
if Variable QTKEY not Equals NO$VALUE
  Set Variable QTINSTLR to
Does File Exist $SFXPATH$\\QuickTime\\QuickTimeInstaller.exe (get result into variable QTINSTLR)
  if Variable QTINSTLR Equals TRUE
    Run Program $SFXPATH$\\QuickTime\\QuickTimeInstaller.exe (WAIT)
  end
  else
Comment: Need to find where QuickTime is installed to compare versions
Read Registry Key HKLM\\Software\\Apple Computer, Inc.\\QuickTime\\InstallDir into QTINSTALLDIR
Comment: Compare version installed to version offered in the installer
Check File Version $SFXPATH$\\QuickTime\\QuickTimeInstaller.exe into Variable QTVER1
Comment: Only need to display the first 3 numbers of QuickTime version
Get File Version $SFXPATH$\\QuickTime\\QuickTimeInstaller.exe into Variable QTINSTLRVER
Parse String $QTINSTLRVER$ into Variables QTINSTLRVER and (Split at last occurrence of pattern)
Comment: If an older version of QuickTime exists, ask the user if they want to upgrade
  if Variable QTVER1 Equals TRUE
MessageBox: QuickTime, An older version of QuickTime® was found on this system. For the best program performance, we recommend upgrading to the newest version.$NEWLINE$$NEWLINE$Do you want to upgrade to version $QTINSTLRVER$ of QuickTime®?
Comment: If user clicks Yes, then run the QuickTime installer to perform upgrade
    if Variable QTUPGRADE Equals YES
      Run Program $SFXPATH$\\QuickTime\\QuickTimeInstaller.exe (WAIT)
    end
  end
end
[/list]

Hi Mark,

If you have any problems doing this on your return, please drop me an email direct at [email protected] or open a support ticket and we will be pleased to assist you.

I need to remind that the forums is essentially only peer to peer support, and occasionally an IA representitive, and as such, replies can take a little time.

Thanks. Before commiting to a product I like to get a sense of the depth of community support. I was not necessarily looking for "official" support but it is welcome.

I seem to have figured out most of my problem with one exception. How do I get my code to run prior to the install? For my Quicktime project it does not matter but now I am looking at a Java app that seems to care.

I think sdeschenes has the answer.... I will look into web media blocks.

Thanks All!

Web media blocks?

Post by MarkMelanson »

Because I utilize Altiris to deploy software I create a single EXE. I get the impression from the documentation that you cannot use Web Media Blocks on this type of output file.

From InstallAware doc:
This command is directive for the compiler, and is not constrained by conditional execution blocks. It has meaning only when used with Web builds and has no effect on Uncompressed or Compressed build types.

So if that is the case I guess I'm back where I started. :-(

How do I get code to execute as a pre-requisite in a compressed EXE?

Thanks!

I think I'm going to have to create a runtime. Is that where I need to look to do this?
