SQL Express 2005

Post by paul.fitzpatrick@avondata »

When I install SQL Server Express on a 64bit computer it does not appear to work (i.e.: No program shortcuts, nothing in add remove program files, and I cannot contect to my named instance that I am installing); on a 32bit system it works fine on all out supported platforms (2000 SP4 upwards)

The command I use is:
SECURITYMODE=SQL DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SAPWD="password" INSTANCENAME="MY_INSTANCENAME" ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine,SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Replication,Client_Components,Connectivity,SDK

Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Perhaps I am asking the wrong question :')

Does the supplied IA SQL Server Express plug-in support x64

It should install without problems, as it will run as a side by side 32-bit install.

Can you enable logging and see what is going on ?

Here is the log file as requested; please advice...

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 9.00.4035.00

OS Version : Professional (Build 7100)
Time : Thu Oct 29 09:42:25 2009

ADS404 : SQL Server 2005 Setup cannot continue because the installation package could not be opened. The installation package has a missing file, or you are running a 32-bit only Setup program on a 64-bit computer. To continue, verify the SQL Server 2005 package you are running is supported on WOW64. If you are certain that you are running a supported SQL Server 2005 package, and you continue to see this message, contact the application vendor.

I have resolved this situation, and just so that all forum viewers are clear - It appears that the Plug-in (at least the version I downloaded) does not support x64 installations.

To get around this issue, this is what I had to do:

1. Download and install a 7Zip archive extracter
2. Navigate to the IA Plug-in folder and rename the Express.7zip file to something else
3. Download the x86 & x64 SQL Express from MS (both x86 and x64 are supported in the same install)
4. Run the installation - This extacts the package to a tempory location
5. Copy the tempory files to a safe place, and rename the parent folder to 'Express'
6. Using the 7Zip utility, zip the files into an archive called Express.7Zip (the version of 7Zip I had only compressed to .7z format - Just rename this to *.7Zip)
7. Copy this new Express.7zip file into the Plugin folder

This should now work on x86 and x64

Please note xI64 is not supported by Express 2005 so don't even try
