Setting Folder Permissions on Windows 2003 64-bit

Post by [email protected] »

I need to set my installation folder to grant everyone full access (read/write). I have read and followed the approaches in various topics
http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... directorya
http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... ermissions
etc, but they only seem to work for 32-bit versions of Windows.

What approach can I use for a 64-bit OS to set the installation folder to grant read/write for Everyone?

Thanks!

I upgraded to the new version with no luck. Has no one needed to to set folder permissions when installing on a 64-bit OS?

I have the same issue.. good luck getting an answer here though.. having used IA for a couple of years I'd have to rate their support as very poor.

really? They would ban a paying customer? The reason I made the comment is because of the number of (apparently) unanswered posts in this forum.

yes. check the thread on ReceiveTimeout from last week. I have seen a few others as well. you have to be very careful what you say if you want to keep support. They say "Support is a Privilege, Not a Right ... your purchase comes with NO SUPPORT RIGHTS whatsoever ... support may be revoked at any time, with or without reason" on http://www.installaware.com/support-contact-support.htm.

Wonderful.. Thanks for the warning. Did you ever find a good solution to setting access rights on folders on a 64-bit system? I am having issues on Server 2008 x64 with code that is working fine on 32-bit OS including Server 2003 (haven't tested 2008 32-bit yet), on the 64-bit OS the folder has no owner and no permissions set after attempting to grant "everyone" full control (I know I probably shouldn't be doing that anyway but it's expedient for this particular project).

Cheers,
Bruce

Yeah, I kinda wish I head read their support policies a while ago. I was not able to really get 64 bit perms working correctly. The closet I got was this (and a readme for my customers to manually set permissions if needed):

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~Set Access Control~
~{3696502F-DE41-4CCC-A427-EF150FFCE5FE}~
~$TARGETDIR$~
~TRUE~
~FALSE~
~FALSE~
~TRUE~
~$INETUSR$~

rspag wrote:I used this after checking the SUCCESS variable:

Code: Select all

Run Program cmd.exe /C icacls $TARGETDIR$ /grant:r *S-1-1-0:(OI)(CI)F /t (WAIT)
cmd /C tells to cmd to execute the command in the string that follows and then to close the cmd window itself
icacls is a cmd command to modify premission to files and folders...
S-1-1-0 is the SID for Everyone (you can use even a User Name but you have to remove *)
(OI)(CI) is to set the access property to subfolders and files (inherit)
F is full access
for some documentation about icacls just type icacls on a cmd window and you will find all the command line parameters you can use or follow this technet link
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/libr ... 10%29.aspx

However I think this only works if you're running the setup as an admin...

PS: If your TARGETDIR contains spaces you have to use "$TARGETDIR$" or convert TARGETDIR in 8.3 format... I used:

Code: Select all

Set Variable TARGETSHORT to $TARGETDIR$
Convert to Short Path: TARGETSHORT
Run Program cmd.exe /C icacls $TARGETSHORT$ /grant:r *S-1-1-0:(OI)(CI)F /t (WAIT)
to avoid any problems with spaces and quotes :D

EDIT: I used this method cause the set access control of IA 9 wasn't working on Program Files or Program Files (x86) subfolders for me...

EDIT 2: I found icacls is only available on vista, seven and server 2003/2008
Xp and earlier versions use cacls instead, with some differences on command line parameters to use...
hope it helps ;)
