SQL Server Express 2005 Installation (XP SP2)

Post by pointos »

I am having an issue installing SQL Server Express 2005 on some computers running SP2. I read through the SQL documentation and it says that they need Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 which I believe is installed in SP3. However, I don't know if installing this will fix the problem.

Have you run into this issues, and do you have a recommended fix for it?

I am wondering if you have a fail proof way to install SQL. I can only think of 2 options, but I have issues with both.

1. Force update to SP3 (I don't want to do this because it takes an hour)
2. Install MS Core XML (I don't know how to check for the service pack (SP2) check for Core Services and install it. Also, I read that installing this can mess up SQL once updating to SP3)

If anyone has run into this issue and has a fix or has any suggestions please let me know.

Thank you.

It's unfortunate that there has been no response to this. I am having the exact same issue.

I'm using InstallAware 9 and have finally been able to get SQL Express 2005 to load on XP SP2.

First, I included the XML Core Services 6.0 in the required runtimes.

Secondly, I replaced the existing InstallAware MS SQL Express package with the most recent one from MS. This can be done by:

1. Downloading most recent package: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

2. Following steps 2-5 (exclude 1 and 6) from this post using the package downloaded in step one. http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2936

This worked for me. My symptoms ranged from a rolling crash to a range of error messages regarding SQL Browser and failures during installation.

We still have problems with this, even though I took the same approach you did. I have an additional step as well, and that's to use MsiZap to forcefully uninstall the "bad" version/installs of MSXML6 and let SQL install it itself. However, there is more than one of these bad MSXML installs so it can be tricky.

Installed 2008

Post by deighvan »

I ended up moving to 2008 due to the Incompatibility Message that Vista and Win 7 displays when installing 2005. This has gone well for the most part. (I still have errors that I have been working through for weeks now. However, they are beyond the scope of this thread.)

I had to follow the steps I included above to get it to install properly. Even after doing so, I still get errors installing SQL Server on *some* Windows XP machines. (For the record, installing .NET on XP crashes every time.) On occasion, I will get an error from the app that prompts the user to install SQL Server from the Windows Update server.

I'm installing from a USB stick, using the Uncompressed export option.

What have you tried and what errors are you receiving?
