APPDATA returns empty string on Windows 2008 R2 RDS

Post by miha96ac »

Hi,

I am experiencing a weird problem on Windows 2008 R2 running Remote Desktop Server (formerly known as Terminal Services)

I am using:

Get Common Folder Location System->Application Data Directory with the "Get for All Users" setting:

~InstallAware Clipboard Data~
~Get Folder Location~
~{8CDEF158-B951-4026-AB88-A2B7859C4B3E}~
~APPDATAUSERDIR~
~15~
~TRUE~

This is working fine when installing with the above code returning "C:\\ProgramData" - however when running "Repair" or an update the above code returns an empty string ""

I have tested on a Windows 2003 SP2 running Terminal Services - and here everything appears to work fine.

I am already using mdPlugins to detect Terminal Services and change to installation/execution mode - however this doesn't have any affect on the above problem.

Please advice

I have just tested it on a Windows 2008 (without R2) - but here the problem does not appear.

So, it appears to be a problem isolated to W2k8 R2.

Test project that replicates the problem

Post by miha96ac »

I have attached a VERY BASIC test project that replicates the problem.

How to replicate:

1) Must be run on a Windows 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop Service Host feature installed

2) Install the BugReplicator application. A messagebox is displayed with the content of APPDATA.

3) Repair the application. 2 Messageboxes is displayed - the first to indicate that the bug exists the second is the same msgbox as in (2)

Hi Michael,

Any news about a possible fix for this bug?

We have a number of enterprise customers complaining, all updates + repairs of our product on the given platform fails because of this issue and we are loosing sales.

Currently we are doing damage control by informing our users through newsfeeds and email about the reason for the bug, that it is located in InstallAware and not in our product and that we are waiting for a fix - however we have been for doing so for 1½ month now and had hoped for a solution by now.
