looking for taking backup of some Files and Folders,ODBC DSN

Post by rahul gupta »

Hi,
I am new to Installaware, but worked on Installshield. I am looking for taking backup of some Files and Folders and the ODBC DSN on the target machine before actual installation happens.

Can u please suggest some script to do the same.

Welcome, Rahul :D

You're going about it the wrong way. You need to test your setups on clean machines using VMware or Virtual PC.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply !!
I am trying it on the Clean Virtual PC.

Steps performed:
1) Installed my application setup created in other technology on Clean VPC.
This installation Created a Folder structure with subfolders containing files of different file types.
2) Get the installlocation from registry.
3) Wrote a Installaware script to move complete Folder structure using wildcard(*.*) to Temp folder.
4) Wrote a Installaware script Copy the folder to a BACKUP folder on the TARGET MACHINE.

Code Snipt:
Move Local Files $Installlocation$\*.* to $TEMPDIR$\*.*
Copy LOcal Files $TEMPDIR$\*.* to $PROGRAMFILES$\BACKUP\*.*

The above code snipt is not working ,i mean not giving any output as desired.
I tried some manipulations to above code snipt. I tried to copy content of one subfolder as well but the result was same.

Actually the my need is to backup all previous installation and then go for installation through Installaware so that client migrate to Installaware. Taking backup is a business requirement. I can't proceed if it is not done.
I hope you understand....

Waiting for a response!

Regards,
Rahul :)

Hi Rahul,

Are you testing for changes after an Apply Install is called? The commands will have no effect unless you do call Apply Install.

Hi Michael,

I am trying this before the "Apply Install" command. Apply Install is last statement in the code snipt. I just skipped in mentioning that.

Then try:

Code: Select all

Copy Local Files $Installlocation$\*.* to $PROGRAMFILES$\BACKUP\*.*
Apply Install
Delete Files Recursive $Installlocation$\*.*
