Installing IA under Win 7 safe mode.

Post by bokkie »

Following some nasty disk problems I basically lost my Win 7 OS. I switched to another HDD and successfully installed Win 7 and I then started to reload my applications, etc. All has gone quite well except when I come to install IA 9 R2. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with it as I must suspect I've got other hardware problems as I get BSOD crashes still. Perhaps my old trusty desktop is now telling me it's time to get new internals which I'm more than happy to do! :)

Anyway, until then I need to keep using what I've got. The problem I have installing IA is the time it takes to uncoil the installation and then to run it. In other words it spends too much time with its head above the proverbial parapet and hence, it is a juicy target for a BSOD sniper. I was thinking of installing it using Win 7 safe mode. The problem though is that it complains about something not running for the msi to latch on to. I could see a service called Windows Installer which gives a strong hint as to what it does, but can anyone tell me if it's (a) possible to have that service running in safe mode, and (b) are there any other services I need to have running? I don't know if anyone has tried installing IA in safe mode? It's more or less my last chance to try and install IA as normal Win 7 boots are still unstable. As you know safe mode runs on a limited set of resources so perhaps IA can't install in safe mode because of missing files or other resources but perhaps someone could tell me for sure?

Many thanks.

Windows Installer is inaccessible under safe mode. This means you need to fix your hardware/software problems before being able to access regular Windows mode, and install applications such as InstallAware which use the Windows Installer service.

Thanks Michael. I tried safe mode first thing this morning and needless to say it would not work and Win 7 refused to start the service. It's clearly time to upgrade and build a new dekstop but getting that past my wife aka "The Minister of Finance" is something else. :D

My old desktop has now gone to the great recycling bin in the sky. It died a painful death culminating in some smoke somewhere on the motherboard. I reformatted my laptop and put Wiin 7 onto it and I installed the R2 version successfully. When I started it running it displayed R2 on the startup splash screen. When I ran my licence executable, the splash screen displays what looks like the original without R2 on it. Is it supposed to do that? I swear that R2 is the only version I have installed but the licence exe was for the original version 9 release. Do I need to refresh my licence exe from the site? I got the impression (wongly perhaps?) that the same licence file is usable?

You do need to refresh your license.
