Control Service stop and delete not working
Control Service stop and delete not working
Hi!
I have a problem where "Control Service stop and delete" isn't working during the "Previous Version Uninstallation" phase.
The service(s) are neither stopped or deleted.
If I uninstall the package (no update) through the "normal" maintenance dialog (modify/repait/remove) the services are successfully both stopped and deleted.
Whats the difference between the two uninstallations?
I'm running IA9 R2 Moya.sp2.050510

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Nope.
Similar problem, but that concerned normal uninstall operation through maintenance dialog which is working fine in my scenario.
My problem is only during the "Prevous version uninstallation" phase when performing an update.
The service properties in IA is not changed in any way between the versions, only the installed binaries, which are updated.

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Do you have the option checked to Wait for service state change completion?
I didn't get a chance to test it, but I'm wondering if it makes a difference whether the Control Service: stop and delete command is placed immediately before Apply Uninstall?

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
No, this option is not checked as I don't want any installer failures or hanging/freezing if the service action fails.
Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Did you try moving the command?

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Nope, I didn't. Whats the difference between the the automatic uninstallation during "Previous Version Uninstallation" execution and the Uninstall option in the maintenance dialog?
Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Well, tried to move the command, but it didn't improve anything
Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Is the command being placed before Apply Install (even though you want it stopped and deleted at Uninstall)?

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Yes, it is.
The thing is that it works perfectly when installing the application, the service(s) are registered and started as expected.
If I uninstall the application by running the same installer again, thus invoking maintenance mode (Modify/Repair/Remove), and choosing "Remove", the services are also stopped and deleted from the system, this is also working perfectly.
The problem -only- occur when upgrading the same application and the installer goes through the prerequisite step "Previous Version Uninstallation".
During this step the services are -never- stopped or deleted.

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
I have verified this behavior.
Could you verify whether the service is being stopped, but not deleted? I ran the test on a service that doesn't run...

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
Hi!
The services are neither stopped or deleted.
I installed two services and started one of them manually after the installation.
I then updated the installer and ran it.
Both services were still there, one running, after the previous version installation step has finished.

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
FYI
I've upgraded to IA 9.1 SP3 and the problem is still not resolved.
Here's a snip from a previous post of mine (totally forgot that this problem occurred before in IA 9.0...)

The problem was reported and also fixed in IA 9.0 and has now reoccurred in IA 9.x SPx in other words...I have to compilations, Installation_A & Installation_B, of the exact same project both compiled with latest IA ( 9.0.6 Moya SP1 )
- I run Installation_A - The service is now installed and started successfully.
I now have two scenarios to choose from; I either uninstall Installation_A before upgrading ( run Installation_A installer again )
or run Installation_B directly, which automatically uninstalls Installation_A before installing Installation_B.
- If I run Installation_A again the maintenance mode is invoked. I choose Uninstall and the service is now stopped and deletes successfully.
- If I run Installation_B instead the "Uninstall previous version" is proposed.
I proceed and upgrade Installation_A, in this case the service is never stopped and deleted.
Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
We are looking into this, but haven't been able to pinpoint the cause, yet.

Re: Control Service stop and delete not working
It looks like the Arguments field of the ServiceControl table of the msi files being produced by IA contain an invalid entry. Deleting the value fixes this. For now, you can edit the tables manually on an uncompressed install, but we should have a fix for this soon.
