Windows 7 - Unable to uninstall old version of [MY PRODUCT]

Post by kwilas »

Please reference this thread:

http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... p?=&p=4729

I am having this issue with one of my installers on Windows 7. I don't want to have to recreate the installer from scratch. Did anyone find the root cause of this issue? This is on an overinstall only.

http://screencast.com/t/MGNiNmUz

This line is throwing the error:

Install/Remove MSI Package $PRODUCTCODE$[REMOVE=ALL] (get result into variable REMOVEOLD)

The product code did not change between versions of the installer.

Thanks.

Further investigation reveals that it might have something to do with 64-bit vs 32-bit. It appears that if I remove this command the problem goes away.

Set x64 - Native 64 bit Windows, AMD64 and EM64T Architectures - installation mode

Any thoughts?

Update: Upgrading from InstallAware 9 to InstallAware 9 R2 seems to have fixed the problem.

This didn't help for me. I'm currently stuck in this same situation. I have a 64 bit installer running on Windows 7 x64. When I run the new installer, I get this same message:
Unable to uninstall old version of ProductName. Please uninstall it yourself using Control Panel Add-Remove Programs before attempting to install this product.
This looks pretty sloppy, and we consider it unacceptable. I have a 32-bit version of the same installer and it doesn't have this problem.

Is there a real solution to this?

Dear fxtech,

Could you send your project (alongside an explanation the actions you take that lead to the problem) to support at installaware.com?

Thanks

I'd be happy to send it, but I just worked around it like someone else did here:

Instead of checking the "64 bit operating system" box in the "Special Requirements" section of the "Application Requirements" tab, I forced it into 64 bit mode in the "Define Setup Globals" section of the MSI script. It seems that if the 64-bit mode is enabled before the "Install/Remove MSI Package -> $REMOVEOLD" line in the script runs, this problem occurs.

Does that help narrow it down?

As I understand it, this is fixed in V10, but we don't have any plans to upgrade right now.

Dear fxtech,

I am happy you found a work-around. If you'd like, you can still send me the project and I will look at it.

Thanks
