Question on executables

Post by cdasilva »

i need to package a new software that we have and i'm evaluating the Express version.

Basically our software requires .Net4 and SQLserver, and also needs Windows powershell and Windows Installer 4.5. So i need to package these 4 setup files along with our own executable.

However, i only want these 3rd party executables to run if they are already not present on the target computer. Basically to make it a conditional executable. I know which registry keys to check, but i dont see a way to do this on the software. It looks like it just gives me an option to run executables with parameters. I also need to reboot and resume in the middle on the installation and i know this software does this, but again i dont see an option to do this. I need to use design view to make this.

The runtimes that you can select from the pre-defined list should do all the necessary checking for you.

With Express version, you won't see it, but by choosing them to include, you're actually including scripts that check and install (if not present) the required runtimes.

The following article describes how to extend the application runtimes:

You might want to try using a higher edition (developer allows MSIcode manipulation). You should be able to add Powershell before your trial runs out and get by with Express, but from the sound of things, you seem like you would benefit greatly from MSIcode. Of course, I'm sure you'd rather avoid the extra cost, but that's why we have a trial period-- so you can decide what is right for you.
