Writing Registry: Vista, W7

Post by lscott1123 »

I seem to be having an issue writing to the Registry for installs to Vista 64 and W7 64. Has anyone else seen this?

I run an installer on XP and I get a new entry in the registry (as coded in installation project). That same installer run on Vista (64) and W7 (64) does NOT get the entry added to the registry, although the install seems to complete sucessfully and without error. I am installing under my ID and I am an admin on both boxes. Is there something special I need to do for those two OSs?

I am currently using InstallAware 8.01 (Build Ame - Req.rtm.110408).

What is the entry you're trying to make?

If you are in 32-bit mode (default) while trying to write to registry on a 64-bit OS, the registry entries should appear under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node

You should also set this for a 32 bit app very early in the setup (before reading or writing any reg entries or copying any files)...

Set Win32 - Native 32 bit Windows and Windows 32 on Windows 64 (WOW64) - installation mode

It will save you some grief and doesn't hurt installations being installed on 32 bit OS's.

I have a couple of files that must go into the Windows\System32 folder and registered with regsvr32.exe from that folder on a 64 Bit OS and to get them there I have been setting the folder path this way $WINDIR$\System32. Only do that if you know for sure that it has to be that way or your program might not run correctly. Might be a better way, but that as worked for my needs.
