Installer Rollback when Service Fails to Start

Post by jkrasky »

Hello,

I have noticed that when a service that I'm installing with InstallAware fails to start, the installer rolls the setup back and removes everything. I would much rather have customers working with my tech support team to figure out why their service is failing to start. Is there a way to configure it so the installation completes even when a service fails to start? I don't see any option.

Thanks!

You should get a prompt indicating that the service failed to start. Choosing Ignore should allow the install to complete. If this is not the case, what version of InstallAware are you using?

As a work-around, you could call sc.exe using Run Program or Run Program as to (attempt to) start the service.

Hello Mills,

I'm running 9 R2 Moya SP3.

The error we get is "Fatal error during installation" and it triggers a rollback. I took an installer trace of one of them and it's failing due to being unable to start one of our services. The error is something about not having permissions to start services. It turns out that isn't true, it's due to a damaged .NET Framework installation. If we have the customer run the .NET cleanup utility from Microsoft and reinstall, the problem goes away because the service starts. This means we have a viable workaround but it got me thinking that it would be nice to not have the installer do this. If it would just complete, we could have the customer fix the problem and not have to go through another reinstall.

Thanks,
Jeff

Would it be possible for you to post the service for me to test with? You could also zip and email it to [email protected]...
