Installer Error when UAC disabled on Vista as a user account

Post by jamesish »

Hey folks,

I discovered recently that my installer doesn't work as I expected it to when I am logged in to Windows Vista if I am logged in as a user account and have UAC turned off.

The setup for the workflow is:

1. log in to windows vista as an admin
2. disable UAC
3. log out of the admin account and log in to a user account

From there, I followed two workflows:

1. I double clicked on the installer. I expected to see an error message telling me the installer required me to have administrator privileges, and I did see that error message. This workflow works correctly.
2. I right clicked on the installer, chose "run as admin". I expected to see an administrator credentials prompt. I saw the warning box that This Program Requires Administrator Privileges.

Running the same workflows on Windows 7, in workflow 2 I receive an administrator credentials prompt.

I believe this may be an issue with Windows Vista's UAC implementation, but I wanted to check in and see whether this is actually an installaware issue. Is this behavior the behavior that you folks expect?

Thanks!

Are you sure UAC is disabled? You shouldn't get any prompt if it is...

What setting do you have for Request Elevation Level in Summary & UAC view?

Hi there,

I have Vista UAC elevation set to "Elevate Administrators Only (highest available)".

You are correct on Windows 7 UAC -- turns out I hadn't restarted my OS when I turned UAC off. Once I did restart, user accounts no longer brought up a request for credentials.
