Installing with FTDI amd64 and x86 driver switch in one .exe

Post by MatthewFinch »

Hi,

I am new to InstallAware but made my decision to upgrade from an old wise package as there was a need to automate driver installation. The driver package comes with both amd64 and x86 versions controlled by a single inf file. I have tried the automation out manually using dpinst.exe for AMD64 and x86 in the driver package folder with a dpinst.xml to control user interface, it all works ok. The issue I am having now is with InstallAware difx driver installation. Using another installaware post http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... 06&start=0 I have included checks for Is64Bit and for ProcessorAchitecture but I don't understand how I can force the installation to include both amd64 x86 versions of DPInst.exe so that when I detect amd64 then the installation is smart enough to use the correct DPInst.exe file. In the c:\windows\ DPInst.log file I just see entry that "System requires 64-bit version of DPInst.exe." I have included the drivers for both x86 and amd64 in my project. If I tick the checkbox "64 bit operating system" in application requirements and only include 64 bit drivers then all works ok as expected. Is there a way for both DPInst.exe to be installed in the same InstallAware installation package and if so how do I adapt my script to decide which to call if Is64bit OS present? It is just the drivers that I need to control for 64bit...I just can't see how to do it?! :(

Dear MatthewFinch,

Are you packing DPinst with your installation or are you relying on its presence on the target machine?

Hi,

Sorry for the confusion. I am not personally packing the DPInst.exe but I am merely selecting the inf files in the driver design area. I was making an entry in the driver list for the inf file for both x86 and amd64. When I look at the uncompressed\data\offline\mDifxIDE.dll folder I see a generated DPInst.exe file created by InstallAware (it is a copy of the latest released DPInst.exe from Windows Driver Kit, 9th Feb 2010 last modified date). However, there are not two versions of the file (32 and 64 bit) when I add both types of platforms to the driver list.

I think it is as if InstallAware only looks at the first platform type in the driver list and compiles a DPInst.exe based on that? If I remember rightly I ticked the "64 bit operating system" and had the driver platforms order as 1) x86 2) amd64..it came up with same message in DPInst.log that "System requires 64-bit version of DPInst.exe." If I then reversed the driver entry list so that amd64 was first and x86 second then compiled as 64bit, then it worked fine but I may be wrong! To me it is looking like I need to create two seperate install files, one for 32 and one for 64 bit and then create another installation as a bootloader to choose which of these installations to use. I didn't really want to do this as I want to keep the size of the installation file to a minimum due to the varying broadband speeds across the world.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Kind Regards,

Matt

Dear Matt,

I think the answer here would be to check if you are running on a 64 Bit OS (Get System Settings) and flow your code accordingly.
Consider the following:

Set Variable ISWINDOWS64BIT to FALSE
Get System Setting Windows in 64 bit Mode into ISWINDOWS64BIT

if Variable ISWINDOWS64BIT Equals TRUE
Set x64 - Native 64 bit Windows, AMD64 and EM64T Architectures - installation mode
DIFx Install x64 driver in folder mydriver
Set Win32 - Native 32 bit Windows and Windows 32 on Windows 64 (WOW64) - installation mode
else
DIFx Install x86 driver in folder mydriver
end

Hi,

I have tried the code you mentioned. I was doing something similar beforehand but still no joy. InstallAware is using DPInst.exe to install the driver set. For drivers to be installed on 32bit platform then DPInst.exe must be compiled as 32 bit application. For drivers to be installed on 64bit platform DPInst.exe must be compiled as 64 bit application. Therefore, I would imagine that InstallAware would build two versions of DPInst.exe for both 32 and 64 bit platforms if I have both x86 and amd64 platforms added in my driver list but I am pretty sure that the DPInst.exe compilation is dependent on the platform version that is listed at the top of the driver list in the design area as well as some dependency on the "64-bit operating system" checkbox in application requirements. Instead of using the DPInst included in InstallAware I can easily rectify the issue by calling my own DPInst.exe versions (32 or 64bit) in my target directory dependent on platform type however one of the reasons I purchased installaware was for it's difx tools. Are you aware of anyone trying to install drivers on 32 and 64 bit platforms in one single executable? Would you be able to send me a sample project as I don't see it is currently possible unless I build two installations (32bit and 64 bit) then build a third installation as a bootloader.

By the way, the DPInst.exe that the installation is currently using is from InstallAware in the data\offline\mdifxide.dll folder.

Dear MatthewFinch,

Could you please send the drivers you are trying you are trying to register to support at installaware.com?

Hi,

I've emailed over the driver package. I think this issue though just requires a little bit of extra code in your difx tools. Maybe something like searching through the driver list in design area and seeing what platforms have been chosen then add the required DPInst.exe file for ia64,x64,x86 into corresponding folders in your data\offline\mdifxide.dll folder. When there is a MSIcode call for DIFX x86 install/unistall then the DPInst.exe in the x86 subfolder is used. When a call for DIFX x64 install/uninstall then DPInst.exe in x64 folder is used. It should be fairly simple code and is probably the method I am going to use if I have to build my own DIFX tool and run as an external appliation during installation. Thank you for any help you can give.

Dear Matt,

Thank you for all the information you provided. For now, as a workaround, I would advise calling DPinst with the Run Program command.
Let me know if you need help authoring this - I am more than glad to assist you on that.
