How the update process knows current client version
Hi,
I am creating a new update pack for my installer as in the help file. I am curious to know how the update process finds the current version of app installed on client machine.
Thanks
Prasanth Nair

Dear Prasanth,
The update process reads the current version from the following registry path: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{ProductCode}\Version.

Re: How the update process knows current client version
Is this in MSI Code ?
Re: How the update process knows current client version
No, its a part of the InstallAware engine that is not exposed in the MSIcode.

Re: How the update process knows current client version
I am trying to create a shortcut using the below code.
Create Shortcut $STARTUPDIR$\ to $TARGETDIOR$\_ClientEgents\Atlas.WindowsAgent.exe
Here is error message :
Error during build: Unable to compile MSI action create/advertised shortcut.
Any idea about this ?

Perhaps it was a copy and paste error but did you mean TARGETDIR and not TARGETDIOR?prasanth.nair wrote:I am trying to create a shortcut using the below code.

Re: How the update process knows current client version
I need to add the app in start up for all users and it has to check for updates when ever I start the app. I dont want to use the scheduled tasks for updates.changed the project properties to Manual update checking and following the same steps provided with http://www.installaware.com/blog/?p=12
I can not see the short cut in all users folder and also in my start up folder.

Dear Prasanth,
I have been advised that I was mistaken - the values you were asking about before are hard-coded into the installation binary, and is not read from the registry.
