Pre-setting a dialog field

Post by NickDay »

Well, I am stuck on something very trivial.

I wish to pre-set the content of the 'Program Folder' field of the startmenu dialog. However all the ways I have tried have failed and it is receiving a name I wish to override.

My current attempt is to edit the dialog,
1. Enter '$NameOfMyVariable$' into the Text property of the MenuGroup text box;
2. In the 'Define Interactive Characteristics' dialog, change the 'Receives Information' drop-down menu from 'Start Menu Group' to '[Written Variable Value]'.
3. Ensure that $NameOfMyVariable$ contains the required program group name before the dialog is displayed.

I'm sure I've done something like this before; what have I missed, please?

Dear NickDay,

Here's what you need to do:
Double click the textbox and select Receives Information: [Written Variable Value]. Set the Writes Values to Variable to whatever variable you'd like the textbox to write to. Set the Text property of the textbox to $NameOfMyVariable$, and call Set Variable NameOfMyVariable to something before you display the dialog, that's it!

Hi Aviv,

Thanks for your reply. I am sure this matches what I'm doing (I forgot to mention that I am setting the Text property of the textbox to $NameOfMyVariable$).

I have carefully checked against each of the instructions in your email, and I still cannot change the value initially displayed in the 'Program Folder' field. I've confirmed that the installer I'm running is really the one I'm building.

I have shown that the field is being set to the text I entered into Project Options->Project Properties->Product Name.

I guess I am doing something stupid, but can't spot it yet.

Dear Nick,

Setting the STARTMENU variable (the variable to which the textbox writes) did the trick -

Add Set Variable STARTMENU to MyText before displaying the dialog and you'll be set!

That's very helpful Aviv. I'll try it on Monday when back at work. The reason why this is necessary escapes me though.

I must say that I almost did not buy InstallAware, basically due to some particularly rude forum replies I had read, which rather put me off the company. I have to say that my experience of the support forum after buying it really has been excellent.

Thank you.
