How to display Session vaiables and other basics

Post by iainmac1000 »

Hello,

Very, very new to installaware and creating installers in general. First impressions are good, however I am having a number of problems.
Basicaly I want my installer to work across XP, Vista and Win 7. Current problems I have are :-

1) When adding files, how can I see what the session enviroment variables are set to ie $TARGETDIR$
2) When adding a folder containing 2 files... I see the folder icon plus *.* but I cant drill down to see the files???? Why not?
3) How can I make a .exe file use a particular icon??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Iain....

Dear Iain,

1) You can read about these variables in the InstallAware help file by clicking F1 and searching for Pre-defined Variables. You can also display the variables with a messagebox
2) When you drag the folder, IA adds everything in that folder for your convenience. Instead, you can create the folder and only drag the two files
3) Are you referring to the EXE that is the InstallAware setup output?

Thanks Giaviv,

1) Perfect
2) Ok
3) I was referring to the app .exe files that I included in the setup (see 2). I have specific icons that must accommpany our apps. I need to ensure that when the app.exe is installed, then the correct icon is associated with that app.exe.

Dear Iain,

To do that, you would have to edit your EXE's resources and assign it an icon.
This can't be done with InstallAware, but any development IDE would allow you to do this (such as visual studio).

Hello Giaviv,

The app.exe in question is not one of ours but a third party app.exe. I've asked the third party company to see if they could use our custom icon - but they replied that this was not possible.

The reason I ask, is that when I was evaluating Setup Factory 9.0, assigning an icon to a third party app.exe file was extremly easy. It seems strange that they can offer this functionality but Installaware cant??

Can this functionality be achieved by scripting or setting a registry setting??

Iain,

This has nothing to do with InstallAware - you are bringing a 3rd party EXE and setting its icon requires some sort of resource editor. Google editing exe's icon and look for a free resource editor..
