Install Service Issue/Feature Request

Post by JonB »

When using the Install Service command, the path name specified does not allow relative paths (using ..). For example, if I specify a service file of #PROJDIR#\..\myproject\Release\myservice.exe, the project compiles without complaint. However, the install will always fail, saying part of the path ".." is invalid. (A nice vague error) This type of path works fine for the Install Files command, so I'm surprised that it wouldn't work for Install Service. It took me a number of hours to figure out exactly what was going on.

Using a service file of #PROJDIR#\ReleaseFiles\myservice.exe works fine, so I will add a build step to move files to such a directory. But I imagine the behavior of allowing a compile that will inevitably fail on install is not intended. It would be great if the Install Service command allowed relative paths like the Install Files command.

Thanks for the input, Jon. I've added this to our feature request list.

As of InstallAware 11 this is still an issue. It makes it difficult to create a project that is used on a dynamic clearcase view which could be mounted to different drive letters during a nightly build...

Thank you ckware, we are aware of that and currently looking at other service controlling solution.

We will keep you updated.

Hello,

What would be a temporary solution to install a service during installation then?
Essentially, I drop a bunch of files down, after file installation is complete I want install:
$TARGETDIR$\folder\service.exe as a service
then start service.exe

I don't see a way to mark a file as a service? The install service option requires that I browse to a file path, but whenever I try this, the build fails...

Maybe in the "install files" section, if you put a check box to mark a file as a "service to install?"

Thoughts?

Hi Chris,

As a work-around, you can find a way to install a service via the command line (like using installutil.exe).
Then, call that command with the Run Program command.

:) I figured you'd say that. Any ETA on if/ when Install Service will be updated to support things like relative paths etc?

Thanks again!
