Installer built with demo won't install

Postby clydes » Sat Feb 05, 2005 10:26 pm

I'm evaluating InstallAware Professional, and I have built a simple installer using the wizard and leaving everything with its default, except that I added some files. When I run the installer, I get a messagebox that says

"Fatal error during installation
Please review your installation commands".

I'm running on WinXP SP2.

This is kind of a show-stopper.

Try running your setup outside of the IDE (run without debugging).

As I recall the same thing happened when I ran the executable
directly, but even if it didn't, what use is that? The debugger is important, especially for debugging the scripting, which was the main attraction of Installaware.

Anyway, I've since moved on. Had Installaware worked, it would have come closest to our requirements of all the products I evaluated, but if it's broke, it's broke.

I apologize for the inconvenience.

This problem occurs only in the IDE and effects a small number of systems InstallAware is installed on. You will be happy to know that we have already fixed the issue and the fix will be provided shortly in an update.

Stay tuned :)

I am having this same problem, and now everytime i try and run my installer it fails with the fatal installation error. All i did was run instead of run without debugging and now the thing won't work, even if i try running the intaller from outside the ide. There has got to be a way round this, I have nearly finished my installer and don't want to re-start the whole project again, PLEASE HELP!

The issue referred earlier in this post is almost two years old and has nothing to do with your problem.

I would check all the settings in the Project Options dialog to make sure everything looks OK.

Ok here;'s what happened:

Run installer as just "Run without debugging" from the menu
All was good
Then uninstalled
All was still good

Then ran again as before a number of times, making minor changes to dialogs and uninstalled.

Then accidently clicked on "Run"
Got that fatal error message!

And... the other I day, when near the beginning of of creating the project, I did the same thing, accidenlty clicked on "Run" and I got the same error message. Nothing I did was solve it. So, I started a whole project from scratch (this one I'm working on) exactly the same as before and had no problems until today I accidently clicked on that "Run" item again.

Sounds dodgy to me...

And I am running Windows XP SP2 like the previous problem.

Cheers.

Unfortunately, there is no way to know what setting you may have changed between the runs - it may be a script error, a project setting error, and the like.

If you would like to try my suggestion, I recommend you review the settings in the Project Options dialog to see if anything looks wrong. Things don't stop working for no reason.

Well I didn't change any scripts, I didn't change an project settings, I just did a unnistall and re-install. I have checked all settings and all as it should be. Things do go wrong sometimes, usually when theres a bug, and this has happened to me twice by just clicking on the 'Run' instead 'Run without debugging'. It seems you're not even prepared to even think about. Most helpful. Thanks.

Well, if you can provide a reproducible test case, that proves this is a bug, we'll be happy to fix it for you! Otherwise, there is no way to telepathically know what is going wrong :D
