How to install to more than one folder...

Post by craigism »

Really three questions:

I want to install my application to one folder and than at a later date install to another folder and keep the first install intact. The installer version 10 seem to want the first install to be removed. Also the installer did not even show the destination dialogue on a second install. This is not what I want. How do I support installing to a second folder at a later date.

Also while testing this the installer for the above issue, it seem to replace existing exe files with older versions (newer versions of the exes were updated by other methods). Is this the correct action? I want to only replace files only if they have either a newer date or a newer version number. The older product had a setting for this feature right on the files screen.

One last question, I have a web install with 7zip files, after installing I disconnected the internet and it still was able to uninstall / re-install. I do not understand why the 7zip is buffered or how to prevent this. If I delete my hosted 7zip file that should prevent my customers future installs right?

Thanks.

Hi,

1. You can mark your installation permanent, and then it won't be removed. However remember that when you are switching versions, the old version will always get uninstalled.
2. This kind of flexibility is only available with the Native Engine. Turn it on by setting NATIVE_ENGINE to TRUE, and read about NATIVE_OVERWRITE and NATIVE_OVERWRITE_OLDER
3. When the installer downloads the 7zip, it extracts and caches them. Therefore, they are also available for un/reinstallation.

Can I clear the cache at the end of the install?

Thanks.

Does clearing the temp folder solve this issue for you?

"Does clearing the temp folder solve this issue for you?" No.
{edited}
I found that clearing the IE temporary Internet files cause a new download to trigger.
Since this question has taken a different path I will open a new thread.

{old question...}
I did try to clear my temp folder and it is still buffered somewhere.

Where is the 7zip is being downloaded to? (I looked at ProgramData and AppData folders on vista and could not find it).
How do I clear the 7zip cache? or...
How do I prevent the 7zip cache?

Caching during download can be prevented by a check-box in the command window.
Caching after download can be prevented by manual scripting of deleting the cache folders, or by forcing never cache setup sources check-box in the build settings.
