I'm using IA 10.10, and have built an install which works fine. However, if the user cancels out of the installation once it's started, they receive a messagebox with the single word "error" as the text, and Yes and No buttons. Clicking Yes will cancel the install and clicking No will allow them to continue, so the dialog works, but it certainly doesn't give the user a good experience. Preferably I'd like to see something like "Are you sure you want to cancel?".
How can I show the user a more appropriate error message? Do I have to trap this in MSIcode and show my own message?
I've included an image of the message.

What happens if you create a basic template and run it without any modification? Does it still give you the same error? If not, change it to use the theme you're using at the moment. Does it change the outcome? It shouldn't but it might help to establish a possible cause-and-effect.

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
Thanks for replying Peter.
I built a simple install, using the Quick Start wizard. I just added files to the install, nothing else (no prereq, shortcuts, etc). When I run that, I get the same error message when I cancel. Just for kicks I tried several of the Themes, and all of them show that message with the single word "error".
Any other suggestions?

Do you have the StudioAdmin version of 10.10? Reason I ask is can you debug/step through the affected code and see if the error is popping up in the dialog or perhaps elsewhere in response to the code that handles the cancel check? I know that's a straw I'm clutching but I reckon it's worth a punt.
Have you tried the mundane option of reinstalling 10.10 again?
There was a thread a while back where someone mentioned about clearing the IA's temp folder. I might be recollecting incorrectly but something comes to mind like that.
Would you be able to zip up the project and attach it? I could run it in my version 12 and see what pops up.
EDIT: I reread your post and it looks like you do have the Studio Admin edition. Do you get the same message if you cancel the installation on other dialogs in the installation sequence as well or is it restricted to just the one place? You shouldn't need to handle the cancel code yourself unless you have a specific need to do something specific.

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
I've got the Developer Edition, not Studio Admin, so I can't step through to debug. I've tried inserting MessageBox calls to see if I can determine where the dialog is coming from. Those dialogs appear, but after the odd "Error" dialog. I added those Messageboxes in several places, and I can see them, but I also see the odd "Error" dialog.
Where is the IA Temp folder? I don't see it in the install directory, or in AppData or any of the obvious places.
Reinstall was my next step, but I just wanted to be sure I wasn't overlooking something obvious.
The only time I see a different error message is if I cancel during the very first dialog, where IA is unzipping, and I see the dialog that reads "The Installaware Wizard is verifying the content of the this setup package blah blah". If I cancel there, I see the dialog I'd expect - the one that reads "Are you sure you want to cancel?". Otherwise, as soon as I see the first screen (the "Welcom to the InstallAware Wizard for blah blah blah"), if I click the Cancel button I see the image I posted earlier.Do you get the same message if you cancel the installation on other dialogs in the installation sequence as well or is it restricted to just the one place?

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
I must have been thinking of something else when I mentioned the cache folder. For some reason though I do have a dim memory (rhetoric!) of something to do with a cache-cum-temp folder but was it to do with web-type builds, I wonder? Anyway, unless someone chimes in with a more authoritative statement, you'd better disregard my suggestion!
I still wonder if reinstalling might not help? Otherwise, I'd also lean in the direction of creating a brand new project of the same type and theme and see if it runs without any files firstly, and then add what you need one-by-one just to see if there's a point where it tips over?

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
I'm trying to reinstall, but keep getting an error when I attempt to do so ("Retry Extraction? Extraction of installataion data downloaded from web has failed blah blah"). I'm not sure what to do at this point, since the reinstall has already done the uninstall (thus I have no Installaware program), and I'm not stuck without a way to get back to my installation. If I cancel out of the install, I get a message that states "unable to extract data from the web", and the install rolls back.
I'm at a standstill at this point.

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
Did you have the full installation media for 10.10 or just the partial installer which downloaded from IAs website? If so, previous versions aren't hosted anymore. However, this thread http://www.installaware.com/forum/viewt ... f=2&t=7904 contains a link to where you could find a full download of 10.10. Does that help?

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
Thanks again Peter.
I was able to download the full installation, and have reinstalled IA 10.10 and installed my license for that version. That seems to have resolved the issue, and I now see a message that reads "Are you sure you wish to cancel?", which is a lot better
It's nice to see people like yourself take the time to help out. I participate heavily at Experts Exchange (LSMConsulting) and understand the time it can take to work through issues like this with newbs like me
Thanks again.

Re: Generic Error Message when user Cancels
You're most welcome!
There is however, an unresolved issue: when can I expect to receive a brown envelope under the table containing a fistful of crispy new £20 notes? I'm not greedy mind, but the more the better, especially in the somewhat 'dry' period between getting paid earlier in December and later in January.
Glad to read you've fixed the issue.
